Booking is strongly recommended. Situated just a few steps away from the Roman Baths, our attractive and atmospheric restaurant is located in a charming candle lit historical cellar of natural Bath stone with vaulted ceilings throughout, and resembles the cavernous cellars of an Italian grotto. The main characteristic of our cuisine is its simplicity. We rely on the quality of our ingredients rather than on elaborate preparation. We also like to offer traditional Italian dishes with a contemporary twist because we strongly believe in those 'Sapori' (flavours). With our finest ingredients coming from Italy, and all of our fresh vegetables, seafood and meats sourced locally, we are able to ensure…
All reviews profiteroles rack of lamb swordfish sea bass prawns pasta dishes bread pudding chicken pizza soto soto book well in advance happy birthday italian food our waiter special occasion best restaurant in bath
Waited a long time to eat here, over a year, was it worth it? You bet! Probably the best Italian food I’ve eaten in a long time, outside of Italy.
Restaurant was very busy for a Monday night, almost full, which for a Monday night...is good to see. We were shown to our table, but a very polite waiter, brought menu’s and asked if we wanted anything to drink, we choose to have two glasses of exceptionally good Sauvignon Blanc from Italy. We order the chicken livers and bruschetta, followed by beef fillet, and sea bass. Beef was beautifully cooked, medium rare, well rested, delicious mushroom purée, salad and roasted rosemary potatoes. Sea bass dusted with pine nuts, black olive and tomato sauce, sautéed potatoes. Again very well cooked, skin on the bass, was so crisp, perfection. Two glasses of Sicilian red wine to accompany the dishes, went down nicely. My husband had room for tiramisu, I pinched a spoonful, delicious very authentic. We finished with coffee and two liqueurs, on the house. Service was polite, never intrusive, a very good meal in comfortable surroundings. Would recommend to anyone, you will not be disappointed.More
We came here for our first dinner as a married couple and they certainly made it feel special. We loved the food and the staff were fantastic. It's a very atmospheric restaurant and a must visit I'd say.
This used to be our favourite restaurant in Bath, in fact we only confirmed our stay in Bath once we’d secured a booking there. Unfortunately the glory days seem to have passed. The service was ok, but no way near the exceptional and personal service...that once was. The food was way off mark - key ingredients were scrimped on and unfortunately (as other recent reviews have suggested - wish I’d read them), the chicken and sausage seemed to be ‘value’ fatty chicken and gristly sausage in a sauce of pure vinegar. Hope this was just a blip, but not sure we’d book again.More
We were a party of 5 dining in this wonderful restaurant last week, the staff were so warm and friendly, nothing was too much trouble, we were all so impressed with the food, the bruschetta is the best I've tasted as were all our meals,...I can definitely see why you need to book early to avoid disappointment, we are all looking forward to another visit to this stunning restaurant.More
We booked this restaurant prior to visiting the city. It appeared on all the guides so we felt it would be a perfect fit. Sadly we wouldn’t recommend this restaurant or come back. Firstly the setting and staff were excellent. Previous comments re the plastic...roof personally seem unfair, more than likely these are structural necessities to keep the place safe.
However the food was not good. Squid was probably the only good item on the menu. Pasta alla vodka was below average, oily and tasteless with undercooked pancetta and pasta that just wasn’t hot. It seemed like the pasta may have been par cooked and warmed up.
The chicken and sausage dish was frankly shocking pretty much an oily balsamic sauce that was so bitter my family member couldn’t finish her dish. I could go on but it would all be along the same vein. Overall this place could be nice but the cooking was not executed well and ultimately was below par. Perhaps they had a bad night but sadly I wouldn’t risk a repeat of what we had.More
We visited Sotto Sotto based on the amazing trip advisor reviews. The decor is absolutely beautiful and romantic. Unfortunately we did not feel the food really lived up to the hype. Food was served quickly and the whole experience seemed to be over fast (not...sure if it because the demand for tables!). For the money we spent, were not sure if it was truly worth it.More
I don’t really understand all these rave reviews - other people must’ve had a very different experience to us! We had a dinner here during our stay in bath - the staff were very nice but there was no atmosphere in the restaurant, at peak...time on a Saturday night.
The food was ok but not particularly notable, and as others have said much of the brickwork is now covered in clear plastic. Overall it was ok, but I wouldn’t recommend it, or go back.More
