The Shambles Kitchen is a very popular choice in the city of York and always has queues outside of it. Also being popular on social media we decided to find out what all the hype is about.
The menu is very limited but it doesn’t need to be any bigger as the 4 main choices are very appealing. The staff were very friendly and seemed to very much enjoy their job which was nice to see. Our food was prepared fresh and very professionally. We were given a bleeper that informed us of when our order was ready, and we were presented with a very attractive selection that we had chose - The Guy Fawkes and The Dame Judy Hench.
The food tasted amazing and we are glad we have indulged. We probably won’t return again as the prices are quite high for what you get but you can’t knock it for this as it is all about the tourists in The Shambles therefore the higher prices are to be expected.

I visited here with my husband for a mid-week lunch.
Neither of us had been before.
There is no dedicated parking. The Kitchen is on the Shambles though so you can walk to it and it is in the centre of York.
This is a takeout only establishment.
We bought ours and walked to a nearby churchyard to eat, which had benches where we could sit down and relax.
The menu here is small. But there is something that everyone could enjoy.
There is no description of any of the sandwiches though (not that we could find, anyway) so had to look online at what each sandwich was as they are not called 'pulled pork and slaw' or salt beef and cheese' (for example) and have names like 'Dick Turpin' which gives you no clue as to what you are ordering.
You place your order at a window in the wall and then are asked to step back and wait.
This isn't an easy job on The Shambles as there are tourists everywhere you step. I felt in the way of everyone!
The sandwiches took about five minutes to be made.
My husband ordered a hot sauce / meat combo and I chose the sweet and salty option.
The sandwiches were both very, very nice although my husband said his wasn't hot in the slightest. I think if you are new to spic, you'll find it packs some heat but if you are a chilli fan then it won't make a dent.
The fillings were tasty and the meat cooked well.
The bread seemed a little cheap though.
The sandwiches were packaged well and despite having sauce and slaw etc, nothing fell out and my clothes remained stain free!
The service wasn't anything special. In fact, apart from them telling me how much to pay and telling me to step back and they would call me when they were ready, they never spoke at all and certainly didn't smile. I wouldn't say the service was rude but it was functional and nothing more.
I imagine the rent on properties on The Shambles is extortionate which may explain why the sandwiches cost so much. I paid ÂŁ17 for two sandwiches. No drinks or anything. Just two sandwiches.
Now. If the sandwiches were twice the size, I wouldn't grumble about the cost.
But the sandwiches were small. Very small.
I just don't think they were worth ÂŁ17 or anywhere close.
We ate at 'Stam and Maria's Street Food' in the Shambles market on another day and got about 3 times the amount of bread, meat, sauce, salad AND chips and paid ÂŁ5 less.
I cannot fault the food at all (like I say, the bread tasted pretty cheap but it wasn't horrid in any way) but I wouldn't eat here again purely because of the cost.

Wwwooowwww! We researched this place on our drive up to York and had it down as a must try based on a couple of things we had watched / read - it did not disappoint!
The staff were so nice & really helpful too which always confirms I want to spend my money somewhere! They helped us make our choice by explaining what was inside each sandwich & also telling us their favourites too!
I had the Beef Reuben - Dick Turpin, which was recommended by one of the staff who said it was their favourite. I’m glad I listened as I will go as far as saying it’s one of the best sandwiches I’ve had. Full to the brim of lovely filling and the flavours were all so perfect!
My wife had the pulled pork and she also really enjoyed hers too!
I know that if we were to ever return to York, we will come back to this place every time.
Already looking forward to our next trip here!

Ordered based on the pictures next to the menu/price list and what I received looked absolutely nothing like what was advertised. In the picture, the sandwich was packed with fillings and overflowing with toppings, pickles etc. The sandwich i received was a tiny little rectangle with a few bits of over-smoked ham and two sad pickle slices. Price for what was advertised would have been high anyway but paying ÂŁ11 for a tiny sandwich is utterly ridiculous. Avoid at all costs - so disappointing.

Hi. The only sandwich on our menu that has ham in is the Dame Judy Hench which also has pulled pork in. It’s a hefty sandwich and is £8. Not sure how you’ve paid £11 as we don’t have any sandwiches over £10 (at the moment). Feel free to email to simon@shambleskitchen.co.uk so I can investigate further.

Sweet Mary Mother of God. Wow. We had a Dick Turpin, what a sarnie! The Beef is pulled and juicy, the spice is spot on with a delicious smokey flavoured running through the background. The bread held together well, considering how moist this sandwich is. Pickles, crunchy salad and scrummy sauce. You even get a sparkler. Not to hype it too much, but we think it's the best sandwich we have ever had for depth of flavour. So SO GOOD!

Amazing food! We tried the Guy Fawkes (brisket) which was sooo tasty and we tried the Harry Trotter which wasn't as flavourful but the meat was of incredible quality.
The only downside is that it's a very sloppy sandwhich and there's nowhere to eat it, you're covered in food by the time you've finished because the very-full-bread is served in paper which gets oily. Take your own paper plate/fork!

Visited York for a couple of days. And can honestly say this place is the does the best sandwich we have ever had.
We tried the Dick Turpin and the dame Judy Hench. Both amazing couldn't pick a favourite, so we went back for more to bring home.
Overall 100% recommend fresh food, excellent service and the lovely lady who served us WOW she can really sing.

Walked in The Shambles when we were thinking about food and the smell was amazing. Looked around then decided to give this a try.
Pros
Service with a smile
Best fresh, hot sandwiches we've eaten for a very long time
Cons
We weren't asked what we'd like on each sandwich
Tips to customers
If there's something you don't want on, presume you need to say so when ordering
Tip to management
Ensure staff explain the condiments on the sandwich or ask if there's something someone doesn't want
Overall - my comment above means I'd normally give 4 stars BUT these sandwiches were sooooo good that they far outweigh my one comment hence 5 stars
Would we eat here again? YES!!!

Oh my! The Dick Turpin aka a Beef Reuben's was absolutely amazing. Generous delicious brisket pastrami, just the right amount of cheese, gherkin and sauerkraut providing an excellent supporting cast of yum, without over powering the beefy star. The staff were happy, smiley and genuinely lovely.

Surely the best sandwiches in York if not the UK. Was busy on a Monday lunchtime but was still only waiting about 10 mins. Made use if the eat out to help out scheme, so classic reuben only cost me ÂŁ4.50 but would have happliy paid full price anyway. Packed full of pastrami, pickles and cheese just like the ones you get in New York. Seating now also available across the street in the church yard. Delish...

We ordered Harry Trotter and ham and cheese sandwich. My family enjoyed the food. The food preparation was also quick so if you are in a hurry, this is the best food that you can buy while roaming around York.

Fun menu (Piers Morgan gammon roll, anyone?) and absolutely delicious food. Quick service, and nearby seating where we watched street performers while we ate. The kids had blow-torched cheese and ham sandwiches, I went for a chicken shawarma - delicious - and my husband went for something enormous and absolutely stuffed with meat.
