Traveling in London from San Francisco, and spotted this well rated place near my hotel. Full disclosure, this place is alright (better than your average sushi roll joint), but given its price and ratings, does not deserve more than 2 stars in my opinion. I was enticed by the "meal", thinking it would be omakase. It wasn't -- just a... More

We have eaten at Defune for many years. It is our family treat as it has the best tasting classic sushi as well as other traditional Japanese dishes. Once my daughter and I ordered too much food (as usual!). I asked for a doggy bag to take home. After the bill was paid I realised our leftovers had been thrown... More

Great dishes with an authentic flavour- some of the best Japanese food in London I have had. If you are in to sushi, sashimi and other mainstays like miso, nasu dengaku - I highly recommend this place.

I have visited here numerous times which is proof within itself of the sheer quality. Absolutely everything from the Miso soup to the Nasu Dengaku is just absolutely fresh and delicious, and the tofu steak being just incredible! Definitely the best Japanese restaurant in London. A worthwhile experience!

I simply love this place! it is unique with amazing real Japanese food. Nothing really trendy in comparison to big chains but the quality and style of cooking is just out of this world. Highly recommended for sushi lovers. Not cheap!

Whereas there was no doubt the ingredients were fresh, this is the most expensive sushi I have ever had for the type of sushi you can get at Tesco. No frills what-so-ever. Only hosomaki and nigri is available (at an exorbitant price) - no chumaki, futomaki, or uramaki. When asking for house specialties, we were met with a shrug. "Service"... More

Went with a friend last night and had dinner- forget the flashy names of places you hear about sushi- Defune is the real deal, we were sitting at the counter and the chef was preparing in front of us (me being abbot picky..), we would ask him to suggest and he would do it, or we ask him to prepare... As a child, I used to pick sea urchins from the sea, crack them on the beach, scoop out the coral and eat it. That's fresh. As an adult I heard of a diver who'd harvest scollops whilst SCUBA diving, and who'd always prise one open underwater, take out his regulator and munch one under water. That's freshest. In the... one of ny favorite spots in London for quick and delicious sushi bites. The ingredients are always fresh and the chef is very friendly snd profissional. They also have some great premium saki that goes just perfectly with the food served there.

As this was my first visit to a Japanese restaurant I was was full of trepidation, however, the staff were very helpful and made it a fun evening. Soft Shelled Crab was spectacular and the Fatty Tuna a revelation. All in all a very pleasant if expensive experience

Staying in Marylebone

Neighbourhood Profile
Marylebone offers what so many London neighbourhoods cannot: a village feel coupled with urban convenience. Much of its success rests in its location. Wedged between the northeastern corner of Hyde Park and the southern end of Regent's Park and with a number of Tube stations within easy reach, Marylebone is as pedestrian friendly as Central London gets. The bustling shopping mecca of Oxford Street separates it from Soho and Mayfair, exclusive Regent Street marks its border with Fitzrovia, and cosmopolitan Edgware Road serves as its western edge. Within this enviably situated quarter are an array of outstanding restaurants (from Michelin darlings to down and dirty cheeseburgers), an impressive assortment of independently owned shops, and some of the city's quietest and most pleasant nooks, crannies and cobbled lanes.
