Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

So, we book a table for four for 6.00pm and are told when we get there that we are to leave the table by 8.15. Nothing has indicated this on the original booking! After ordering two bottles of champagne and two bottles of wine from the store (which corkage is due) we are asked to leave the table and go to the bar! We tried to explain that nothing was indicated on the original booking, but they were just not interested. They had their sale and that was all they were focussed on. It is a shame as we have been to the wine bar a couple of times before and had a good evening. The staff were not interested in our complaint at the time. Be careful of this wine bar that is charming on arrival.

Dear Sippingpimms, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am sorry to hear about your disappointment, but I would like to inform you that we did our very best to allow you more time to enjoy yourself. Open table, the bookings platform that we use, allows only 1h30/reservation. We have allowed you to stay 45 min extra. The fact that we kindly gave you the option to seat at the bar, it was a courtesy from our side. So sorry to say, but in busy days the time you can have the table is limited. Looking forward to seeing you back. Sincerely, Le Vieux Comptoir

I was a little bit apprehensive about coming after seeing some bad reviews- after eating there I feel like these people just don’t understand how restaurants work! It was a wonderful evening with a very nice waitress who made a kind effort to speak both French and English to our table (my wife speaks French). The food was very good! Wonderful desserts as well. Yes we had to leave a little early because the table was rebooked but the waitress was not rude about it. I am happy that they are getting enough bookings - would be sad to see the place go out of business. will definitely visit again!

I went to Le Vieux Comptoir with a friend for a long overdue catch up and the restaurant is a wonderful hidden gem. I'm not usually a red wine person, but the Malbec was one of the best I've had! We had a delicious cheese & charcuterie board to start which came with a basket of bread. We both ordered the Confit de Canard which rivalled one I recently had in Paris. And the service was wonderful. The staff were friendly, welcoming and made lovely conversation The thing which really ruined our evening was a woman and her friends (see KKSpecialAgent's review below). When the staff came to clear their plates she responded by saying 'she could have made better at home' - just incredibly rude. Why didn't she say something before they cleared their plates?! They politely thanked her for her feedback and offered her some bread or a replacement meal, which she declined, before complaining to her friends that she was still hungry. She then spent at least 20 minutes complaining incredible loudly to her friends and all members of staff who came by her table, which ruined the evenings of everyone around her. When the bill came she complained loudly again at the cost, which was very reasonable given three of them had wine, starters and mains. She was so rude that when she went to the bathroom her friends apologised to the staff on her behalf. Honestly, a horrible woman who really impacted my evening! She could have quietly said if there was something wrong with her meal and the restaurant would happily have provided an alternative. Her review is not reflective of the restaurant at all!

I went 4 times to this restaurant, two times with my wife, one time with my wife, my boss and his wife and the last time with a friend. With my boss i booked a nice table in a room aside we got in fact a simple table under the glass roof despite that they confirmed thatt we will have a nice table. But it was OK... Just don't rely on the booking. Now the biggest problem was the last time i came the 9th October 2019. As usual, the food was excellent. The problem is that when i had to pay for the bill the waiter, a young man, asks us if everything has gone well and if he can add the "service charge". With my colleague we laugh and we say of course. I paid confident without looking too much because i was inviting my colleague. On the way home, I looked at the bill and the amount billed to my card by the server: the bill with service charge included and the waiter added 12% more on the machine and rounded up to 120 instead of 111. In other words, he abused my confidence and put 9 pounds in his pocket without my consent. I wrote to the manager on their website, they never answered. In short very good food, but very bad service with scam, when you have a big bill you expect to have honest waiters... I am very disappointed, I have been there several times. But here I am very angry it is a real little verbal scam that this waiter made us. I accepted the service charge not to add 9 pounds over service charge! It doesn't make me want to come back and it damages the reputation of this restaurant.

The waitress was very rude to all of us. We were half French and foreign people and she didn’t make any effort to speak English to them, it seems to annoy her. We had for example to ask many times to have a bottle of water or bread. She took the bottle of wine and fill our glasses without asking if we wanted her to do it just to throw it in the trash so she won’t have to do it later (one of the person were at the toilet and didn’t want more and was surprised to see his glass filled). She didn’t take the time to explain us clearly things so we had to pay more than what we expected. We were surprised that in a French restaurant there is frozen bread which were half unfrozen to eat a fondue. This is a restaurant way too expensive for the quality of the service and the meals. I don’t recommend it if you want to taste a good French restaurant in London.

The waiter or manager, an older man, was rude, arrogant and as another reviewer put it "casually insulting". Suggested I need glasses when I queried something on the menu and then flirted at my dining companion. Embarrassing. Regarding the food, The vastly overpriced snails were tiny and tasteless, the bavette was served tepid so as to be barely edible. The cheese and wine were good but very expensive for what they were. Additionally, the service was inattentive and I had to walk to the bar at the back a couple of times to ask for sundries. Dingy basement atmosphere. We were the only two dining in there, claimed he had 50 earlier when they couldn't even co-ordinate the food temperature for two. A joke. Rushed us out at the end saying all the tables were booked for a large party. Will never go back. No danger of that!

A gem, hidden away on a back-street in Marylebone. The duck liver parfait was excellent as was the rest of our menu as well as the selection of wines through out. The "low-key" atmosphere, good service and absence of any disturbing background music added to the experience. Highly recommended. will definitely come back.. Oh, forgot to mention the prices. very affordable indeed.

I accidentally stumbled upon this wine shop/restaurant and tbf, I'm very glad I did. Wide selection of French wines and champagnes from different regions at competitive prices. The guy working there is really knowledgeable, polite and helpful. I picked a few bottles and I'll definitely go back for more!

I don't understand the bad reviews on this page.. maybe it's people with high expectations or expecting a Michelin star experience in a little cellar? I have been to this restaurant twice and both times the food was excellent and service very good. Huge portions as well. We went a couple of days ago, the frog legs very nice, onion soup excellent in a huge bowl, the duck leg too big (my partner finished my plate) and the duck and blue cheese hamburger out of this world. I love this place and the ambience and I will come back for sure. Merci.

We visited this restaurant for an early evening dinner. The place looked very nice with great lighting and pleasant enough staff. However the food was a great let down. I ordered a favourite of mine French onion soup and what arrived was a clear broth with vastly undercooked onions, I was very disappointed. Our Main of a shared Fondue was equally poor. Not terrible but again just really not very good. As such we did not stay around to try a dessert. A nice bottle of wine but not cheap and as such I really felt the final bill was over the top for what I had received. Had been here before and had liked it so this was a return visit. We will not go again.

Can forgive when food may not be up to scratch but to order a boeuf bourguignon in a French restaurant that was not edible and was sent back almost untouched and then when asked if meal was ok the attitude was as if I was looking for a free meal…. If anyone looks at my reviews they will see that I rarely post anything other than positive reviews. Purpose of this review is to perhaps encourage a more amicable approach when a diner is not satisfied! After the difficult time that the hospitality industry has had we all want to give support but this is a two way street… Please take this feedback as way to improve client experience and accept that sometimes things do go wrong and perhaps a better way of handling dissatisfaction

Once to the most awful dining experienced ever: The Manager took our service at 9pm telling us we needed to order by 9.30pm before kitchen closing which we promptly did. He then decided, since we were on a date, to pass casual insults and get fresh, all whilst rushing through the service, before proceeding to say he was closing the restaurant at 10.30pm due to Westminster licensing laws As a result, my main course was taken away before I could finish it , and I was requested to pay the bill which was put under my nose whilst I was still chewing my food. My date, who the manager had decided earlier to flirt, was speechless at the audacity and rudeness that we were greeted with. Avoid the French edition of Faulty Towers, unless you are looking for an alternative to a local Comedy Club.

We had a great get together to remember an old friend at what was one of his favourite restaurants. It certainly lived up to its reputation. The staff were welcoming, efficient and attentive throughout our visit. The food quality was amazing, the wine selection wide and the prices reasonable especially given the quality. Well worth a visit.

Called two weeks ago to book a table on Thursday evening for my friend and I and asked if it would be possible to have a table respecting social distancing due to Covid. I’m French and the person on the phone, French as well, asked me (in French): Why? Are you scared?” with an almost ironic tone. I was stunned by the question and explained to him that “yes indeed I did not want to take unecessary risks as everyone reacts to the virus differently and that the last time we had been assigned a table just next to a group of 6-7 people”. The person then tells me that “of course if you are old and have underlying illnesses, you’re not going to do very well...”. Clearly someone who thought that he was a medical specialist when everybody knows by now that this statement is simply not true and that people of all ages have died! Reminded me the Parisians “know-it-all” when I lived in France. Anyway, I did not bother cancelling the booking for fear of having to listen to more idiotic comments from this person. For sure people like him are not helping to keep the virus under control and will then cry that they lost their job.

Delightful spot adjacent to a little park, and relaxed reasonably spacious interior. Authentic French menu, tasty and attractively presented dishes. Good wine list. Even on a quiet day, service was somewhat lacking. . . slowish and unenthusiastic.

Marylebone
Marylebone offers what so many London neighbourhoods cannot: a village feel coupled with urban convenience. Much of its success rests in its location. Wedged between the northeastern corner of Hyde Park and the southern end of Regent's Park and with a number of Tube stations within easy reach, Marylebone is as pedestrian friendly as Central London gets. The bustling shopping mecca of Oxford Street separates it from Soho and Mayfair, exclusive Regent Street marks its border with Fitzrovia, and cosmopolitan Edgware Road serves as its western edge. Within this enviably situated quarter are an array of outstanding restaurants (from Michelin darlings to down and dirty cheeseburgers), an impressive assortment of independently owned shops, and some of the city's quietest and most pleasant nooks, crannies and cobbled lanes.
