Had a great dinner at Vanilla Black and tried the vegan 5 course menu - I'm not vegan or vegetarian so I was intrigued to try all of the delicate and imaginative dishes on offer - interesting ingredients, carefully prepared and beautifully presented. Great ambience,...More

This was a birthday dinner, so a special treat. I am not a vegetarian/vegan but I my diet is predominantly vegetarian so I was open to this. We chose the Financial Times Laurent Perrier 5-course summer tasting menu; we chose one vegan and one vegetarian...More

Atmosphere is intimate, service is not overbearing, but unfortunately food was not consistent. Starters were a mixed bag with the smoked aubergine being reasonably tasty but the frozen Avocado being bland. Mains, both porridge and a mushroom couscous dish were elaborate but lacking greatly in...More

What a gem. A friend recommended this restaurant after I was complaining about never having a great choice of vegetarian options on a menu. When I had a trip to London booked, I couldn't turn down the opportunity to visit. We had a wonderful evening...More

I came here with a vegetarian friend after a trip to the theatre to give them more than the obligatory one choice in other restaurants. The service here from start to finish was first class with all the serving staff been attentive. The menu was...More

I'd read a few reviews on here that had made me cautious prior to visiting. I must say, the negative comments below were not representative of my experience at all. The service was really very good, and definitely went to some effort to make sure...More

Vanilla Black has lovely decor and the service was exceptional...the food however was very disappointing. The flavors were rather bland, textures unappealing and the variety of offerings did not please a general group. On the plus side the bread was very good and the staff...More

We went here after my sons graduation ceremony. He has been a vegan since he was 16 and is now 22. The rest of the party (4) are not vegan or vegetarian. Absolutely loved it! I misread the menu and wasn't so keen on my...More

I have been here many times over the last few years and the food is amazing. You can get a gluten free menu which is innovative and delicious. They mix old favourites and new options so there is always something new to try. They put...More

The staff was very nice. I was excited to try this vegetarian/vegan place, and I'm glad I went once, but I have no desire to go again. No new flavors, very small tastes of things, which I understood going in, but nothing I tried was...More

Description
Your mother's mantra of "eat your vegetables" probably never brought to mind dishes quite like this. Vanilla Black restaurant, originally from York but now located in the City of London near Chancery Lane, smashes the stereotype of bland, lentil-laden hippie dishes. Instead, Vanilla Black takes a modern, imaginative and ambitious approach to vegetarian cuisine. Result? It is the only vegetarian restaurant in London that's recommended in the Michelin Guide. At Vanilla Black, it's not "vegetarian cooking", it's "vegetable cuisine". The dining areas are spacious and done with art deco-esque flair, Vanilla Black's cool and comfortable dining room sets the stage for its innovative cuisine. Dishes such as hickory smoked duck egg and Ducketts Caerphilly pudding and sweet potato vindaloo with saffron risotto are sure to make an impression on even the most diehard carnivore. Vanilla Black's desserts like carrot cake and orange sorbet with crystallised coriander delight the palate.
