Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

Absolutely fantastic experience, we had the dinner tasting menu together with the matching wine. The ambience in the restaurant was lovely, very relaxed but with exemplary service. It was a real treat, to celebrate a special occassion. Both the food and wine were outstanding.

Outstanding! What a gem and what a chef, Ryan is the most down to earth and chatty person. His personality, restaurant, staff and hospitality was just absolutely outstanding. Shocked to see no automatic service charge of 12.5% - we as a choice added this on...as its more than well deserved. The hospitality industry needs us now more than ever with the rising cost of living pressures so go visit then - you’re in for a treat! Thanks to you all for making my birthday meal special. We will absolutely be booking for the summer. The most humble and most passionate chef! All the produce is the best, freshest and importantly showcases the local cultural heritage. Thank youMore

Stunning food, fabulous presentation. We saw a TV programme recently where the chef said he doesn’t read positive reviews. I hope he does read this one because he deserves to know how happy he makes his clientele. The food we had was practically perfect. Our...venison dish was the best course of food we’ve ever had. The fish course had an amazing depth of flavour. The cheese course astonishing. Snacks were outstanding the the soufflé delicious. We’ll done to the entire team who prepared and served an outstanding and reasonably priced Michelin starred mealMore

We ate here at lunchtime on Friday 26th January. We were very excited about coming here after seeing the program by Tom Kerridge last year. We were definitely not disappointed. This place has had hundreds of excellent reviews, lots of good ones and just a...very very few average or negative ones however, apparently the chef only reads the negative ones. Therefore all we can really say is that we are very much in the excellent camp and so ditto with all of those. Extraordinary food with layer upon layer of flavour, beautifully presented by knowledgeable and attentive staff. Of all the one starred places we have eaten (both in the Uk and France), this was the best experience and food we have had. Truly memorable. We are just glad we ate here before it gets more stars. That surely won’t be long in coming.More

Wow. Let me start with that. Beautiful food in a relaxed, yet atmospheric restaurant in the wonderful town of Ambleside. Every course was absolutely nailed in terms of flavour, texture and presentation. Impossible to pick out a favourite as they were all equally impressive. Lovely...that Ryan comes out to introduce himself and a few courses during the night. He makes the time to have a conversation, not just going through the motions of speaking to guests. We’re local to Cumbria and Ryan engaged with us about restaurants in our area even telling us where he tried and recommended. His humility also came through as he talked positively about other establishments and chefs in Cumbria without, it seemed, realising he’s one of the best chefs in the county! The FOH staff are evidently passionate about the restaurant and the food also. The added touches of a welcome letter and two sides of A4 explaining exactly about each dish is a great touch and Ryan’s passion for Cumbria and local ingredients (apparently sourcing Cumbria grown vegetables is nigh on impossible!) really comes through. We dined at 7:30pm (arrive on time as there is no waiting area, the staff will inform you of this prior to your booking) and the experience lasted just over 3 hours with the cheese course. Thoroughly lovely, memorable experience and hopefully somewhere we will return.More

We were warmly welcomed as we arrived at the historical workplace of Cumbrian poet Wordsworth who was postmaster at the Old Stamp House in 1813, now a renowned Michelin star restaurant in the heart of Ambleside. Shown immediately to our table in a cosy dining...room boasting a 19th century selfie illustrating Wordsworth himself in post, we were greeted by head chef Ryan who delivered a delicious consomme welcome warmer, brewed from meat of the day. A perfectly baked beetroot macaron style amuse bouche set the bar high with pickled apple and a cumberland sauce. A hearty rabbit canneloni followed. Beautifully baked warm bread bathed in a herdwick fat blessed the table, impossible to resist but satisfyingly rewarding and the perfect medium for secretly mopping the remains of the spiced mead veloute from the potted shrimp course. The poached egg yolk swaddled in the pumpkin moose with black trompette treats was delicious, followed by a loin of cod outstandingy full of flavour and finally the star of the show was Cartmel venison, celeriac and a well balanced truffle sauce. Most of the wine pairings complimented the courses well although the first three whites lacked variety. We wondered whether Craig was actually a somellier as the descriptions were rather shallow and always rushed. Finally the desserts, which started with a delightfully light yoghurt moose and rhubarb sadly ran out of steam as the final souflee was bland and confused with poached pear, but thankfully salvaged with a rich tasty rum sauce. Overall, a good value restaurant, very friendly, worthy of a star and highly recommended despite the final course perhaps not matching the high standards of the previous six.More

The most fantastic place, very unstuffy and unpretentious as some places can be when they gain a star or two. Ryan bobbing in and out of the kitchen was a lovely touch and not at all staged just a really natural and friendly guy and...the food well, obviously superb as you’d expect.More

Five of us had the lunch tasting menu, I’ve been lucky to visit several Michelin star restaurants in my lifetime, and I have to say , at £55 for lunch was by far the best value. Staff were friendly and provided excellent service throughout. Highly...recommend!!More

Travelled up for the day for lunch, the food was delicious and we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of dishes for the price. Ryan came and served one of the courses which is a lovely touch. Service was excellent and quite laid back for...a Michelin restaurant, we are already planning a return in the summer.More

A Michelin star restaurant that didn't disappoint. Hard to find fault. The food was outstanding with attention to detail unbelievable. Staff friendly and knowledgeable. The Pinot Noir wine was great. Nice ambience in the restaurant. Individualised letter and menu a lovely touch. A tad expensive...but when you get quality food and service like that you shouldn't complain. Will definitely visit again.More

By far, the best 1 Michelin star restaurant in the UK. The food is outstanding and works well. A nice little touch is that the chef personally comes out to deliver a course to each table and to have a quick chat with the diners....I will definitely be visiting again and booking for later on in the year.More

The menu was...so relevant to the season and Cumbria … The attention to detail was flawless .. the personal service from the team and Ryan was second to none .. we live in Spain now but hail from Cumbria and I have to say would eat again and again at the stamp house .. it was perfect … well done and thank you Ryan and the team 👑👑👑More
