Myself and my wife booked a couple of nights away in Hull and after a busy day shopping and sight seeing we wanted some food and came across this gem. From the moment we stepped inside this pub, we felt warm and welcome, the staff were so friendly and welcoming. The decor is next to none at this pub, rustic and classic! The drinks were very reasonably priced and the food… wow! My wife got the fish goujons and I got the Cajun chicken ciabatta, and it was the best chicken sandwich I’ve ever had! An amazing experience and we will defo be back, Thankyou to the staff at the lion and key for a lovely end to a great day.

On a film-set street, 30 seconds from the hustle and bustle but seems 30 minutes away, lives a gem of an old school pub. This gem has some great beers but its main selling point is the food. The place was packed which was a good sign. We rang the bell on the wall (a nod to the old Irish pub days) and was served some delicious pub style fish and chips. Not been asked “skin on or off” for a long, long time but shows attention to detail. Enjoy!

Another of my occasional visits to Hull and another visit to the Lion & Key. And, as before, we were not surprised. Both dishes we had were delicious as were the ales, and the bill represented excellent value for this very high standard of food. I'll repeat my previous comment as it's still totally true: this is where I have had absolutely the BEST fish and chips meal ever, anywhere. Outstanding.

We had a table booked for 6 yesterday lunchtime , we had to wait 20 mins for our table and then they told us 1 hour 30mins wait for food! We had an escape room booked and so we had to gulp our food down to get there on time ( was our daughters birthday ) / she had come from York and her boyfriend from Leeds . The staff were lovely though , the surroundings very nice , the food was ok too. Just service was appalling .

Been a big fan of this place for years but recently prices have gone up and quantities dropped and this time it’s gone too far. Menu has reduced further, prices gone up more and poor quality. The grilled haddock was in a pool of water and had scales on it, brought this to the attention of the waitress and she said she’d tell the chef. The fish and chips had the smallest portion of chips and tartare sauce. Usually really busy but much quieter this time and we can see why, £35 for these two meals is not acceptable. Great shame but we wont have this on our shortlist of favourite restaurants any more.

Went on a cold Tuesday evening and found it very inviting. Wasn't too busy and we wasted no time in ordering a drink. I was a bit sceptical about the lager because I hadn't heard of it before but it was very good. Got the menu, very homely food, just what you need when you're working away. I ordered the cottage pie and it arrived piping hot served with real fat chips. Certainly the best I have ever tasted, absolutely delicious. Had a couple of pints and a glass of wine. Everything on the menu was reasonably priced and it's a great little pub. If you're a fan of real ale (I'm not) I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Came for mid week lunch. It was busy and was told 35 min wait for food which was fine. Had expected to wait around that time. After over an hour no food had arrived, we asked if our food was on its way to be told they're just starting it now and will be 10 minutes. In other words they'd forgotten about us. Other tables that arrived after us had received their food. After a further 20 minutes the food arrived - pizza and spaghetti Ragu. A wait of an hour and a half. The food was excellent though, better than we've had in Italian restaurants and great portion sizes. Unfortunately the service was dreadful and ruined the whole experience. As good as the food was it couldn't make up for the poor service. We were even sat in front of the bar, the bar staff could see how long we had been waiting but did nothing. So disappointed, we had heard such good things about the place and was really looking forward to visiting.

First time in Hull. Picked this pub at random. Intended just to have a beer or two but then saw the menu and decided to eat as well. The very friendly young lady running the bar helped me make my choice and stone-me if it wasn't one or the best pub sandwiches I've ever had. Anywhere. Interesting range of local beers on tap and with the trip to take in the ceiling decor alone.....rarely so easy to give a pub 5-stars....đź‘Ś

We went after visiting the Streetlife Musuem for lunch, couldn't fault anything. They were extremely accommodating of us all, from accommodating a food sensitivity, popping out to get an additional milk for a latte, making sure we were welcomed and comfortable. Very friendly team of staff, and good food, quirky interior. We all enjoyed our lunch. If it could be accommodated my only small recommendation would be a baby changing table (apologies if there is one, and I just couldn't find it), however this is purely a recommendation and not a fault. We managed without one, it's just very helpful when there is one. All in all would certainly recommend!

I’ve heard that the pub does good food, so me and 5 friends went for dinner about 7pm. I ordered veggie Thai green curry, my friends ordered pizza.. mine showed up, was a bowl of rice, some new potatoes, a few wedges, hardly any veg and about a spoon full of sauce.. I said to the waitress that this isn’t thai green curry, she responded it’s veggie, no meat, I said I know… but it’s not thai green curry.. she replied kitchen closed now anyway… in a curt way… wasn’t bothered about my comments re food, she walked off… my friends pizzas were like something you would get from your freezer, very bland… crap food and crap attitude from the waitress. Only positive thing I can say is that bar staff were friendly… won’t be going back

On a positive note, the staff are very friendly and make you feel welcome, Having not eaten at L&K since Dave the chef left back in March we have given it miss based on the past reviews but decided to give it and go and see for ourselves. I am sorry to leave should a bad review, having eaten in this pub for last 12 years and perhaps taken Daves cooking for granted too much, I feel if no feedback is given the food will not improve. What has happened to the food, the pizza was totally inedible, the dough was too thick and the toppings tasteless, hubby only managed to eat one slice and left the rest. The same was for the calzone, poor quality ingredients and again the dough way to thick. Please please improve the food quality, we need to be supporting pubs and restaurants at the moment and we as a customer do not want to be wasting our hard-earned cash on poor quality food.

Just here now. The sign advertised food all day, but went in at 5:00 to find out food is finished at 5:00. No draft cider for my husband and was served a pink gin and lemonade with flat tonic. The place is cozy, but service is lacking.

Set in the Old Town The Lion and Key is a very welcoming and friendly pub. The walls and ceilings are covered with beer mats and fascinating old posters, relics, containers etc The staff were excellent and the service, in this really busy pub, was very good There was a good choice of beer and spirits and a pretty extensive food menu. We actually had dinner here twice and all the food we had was superb - freshly cooked and very tasty The best pub we have been in in many, many years

Went here after reading the good reviews, was looking forward to trying the fish & chips. However was very disappointed, the fish was ok but the chips were unpleasant, overcooked & soggy. Would return to the Lion & Key for a drink as it has a good atmosphere but not the food as it's inconsistent & overpriced.

A really nice pub! Was taken here by my friend and we got two cocktails for ÂŁ10 and I had the special beef stew which tasted great. My friend enjoyed the fish and chips too. It was good they had buttons for table service. I think I'd have to come again to get a fuller opinion on the place, but I'd definitely come back.
