Went to Malt and Anchor had their wednesday special evening meal which was their awarding winning fish and chips(with compliments) washed down with a bottle of Italian Prosecco all for the very reasonable price of ÂŁ40 for a couple.Restaurant was tastefully decorated looking newly refurbished throughout.First class warm ambient seating downstairs(plus takeaway available) with further seating provision on the first floor. Attentive, discrete and polite service provided by Livvy for customers. I was pleasantly surprised how quiet it was the night we went but would certainly call in again whenever next in the locality.

Visited at lunch, without booking, and was promptly sat at one of the tables on the ground floor, I believe there are more tables upstairs but downstairs had about 20 covers.
The menu is simple but effective, it clearly outlines the fish and chip options, offers other fish / seafood dishes, a sausage and mash option and plenty of pie varieties to choose from. Both big plates and small plates are available across the menu.
I ordered the small cod loin and chips with extra curry sauce (chip shop not Indian) and a large glass of Rose; peas and tartare sauce came as standard.
My wine came quickly, the food was slightly longer (about enough time to cook the fish!) and it all looked amazing. The fish tasted great too: Light, crisp batter, covered in black pepper and salt, was superb and the chips, peas and curry sauce were all above the normal restaurant fish and chip level.
The bill was about ÂŁ30, which given the wine was at least half this, felt good value. I really enjoyed the food, and yet didn't feel over faced as one can, sometimes, after a good lunch.
Jackie, my host was warm, efficient and super friendly. Go here if you want a really good experience and some proper nosh.

I've walked down this round so many times and thought it was "just" a bar.
Booked dinner for 2, as we were craving decent fish and chips, and the Malt & Anchor did not disappoint.
Light crispy batter, succulent juicy cod, phenomal prawns of all sizes, and epic chips.
The staff are friendly, but not in your face.
The decor is pretty cool, although it was a little chilly upstairs (very old building). My partner had the gluten-free fish & chips, and you genuinely couldn't tell the difference.
Will definitely be back!

We stumbled across The Malt and Anchor while visiting Cirencester and so glad we did. The fish and chips was superb likewise the local beer, my wife is Vietnamese and quite fussy with English food, she ate all her meal and said how good it was, praise indeed. We were served by Jackie who was very friendly and helpful. This certainly was not the cheapest fish and chips we have had, but with every penny and we will definitely visit again when in the area, highly recommended đź‘Ś

A hidden gem in the heart of Cirencester… i went for lunch with a friend who is local to the area and although a little bit on the expensive side, the food and service were exceptional… the curry sauce was out of this world! Must visit!! Izzy was our server and was a credit to the restaurant!

I was looking forward to visiting the M&A based on it being voted for the award of best national fish and chip restaurant. The restaurant has a good feel to it, is very clean, and the staff are friendly. We tried a few things on the menu, and the tempura prawns were particularly good. The scampi was also quite tasty, but the breaded coating wasn’t that crispy. The chip shop sauce was a little watery, but had a great taste. The chips were the biggest disappointment, which was a shame. They were quite hard/dry, and you could taste the oil.
The restaurant is quite pricey, which is to be expected in places where the food/serve is top drawer. It would be unfair to say the food we had was average, but it did sadly fall short of our expectations.

Wouldn’t return. Very small portion of cold, dried mush peas.
Curry sauce has no taste and very watery, a waste of ÂŁ4.
ÂŁ3.50 for a half pint of Coke Zero!
We were not offered any more drinks and half way through the meal, we all had empty glasses and no staff upstairs to ask.
Children’s meal £9 for one sausage and a handful of chips.
No idea what the awards are for!

Had a family meal served by Jackie. I honestly can't remember a better fish and chips. Food was served in beach buckets for the kiddies which they loved. Really good curry sauce. Genuinely lovely. Will come again.

Malt and Anchor offers an outstanding fish and chips experience, combining fresh, perfectly battered fish with crisp, golden chips. The cozy and modern atmosphere adds to the charm, making it a great spot for both locals and visitors. Our server, Jaki, provided excellent service, which made our lunch even more enjoyable. Highly recommended for a taste of a British classic with a contemporary twist!

On a cold, rainy day Jackie put a smile on our faces. We were made very welcome even though closing time was not that long away. Our order was taken and hot drinks arrived swiftly. The cod n chips and mushypeas all arrived beautifully presented and piping hot. The batter looked amazing. Really crisp and not oily at all. I upgraded to sweet potatoe fries and these were excellent. Perfectly cooked, not squashed or burnt. Very light and very hot. I was even offered a slice of lemon for my Earl Grey tea which never happens any more. So top notch service. Thank you Jackie and Chef :-)

Fantastic fish and chips and the 'bubble' red shrimp was spectacularly good - like eating lobster for half the price. Faultless and attentive service brightened up a quiet Wednesday evening. Very highly recommended and we hope that they reach the Finals in the Fish and Chip award. So deserved if tonight was anything to go by.

This fish and chip restaurant is absolutely fabulous. The menu is extensive and our choices didn’t disappoint at all. Jackie our hostess was fabulous too. It was very busy and she ensured the people eating in or collecting their take away order were well served and happy. She was a great ambassador for the restaurant. My husband has Parkinson’s and needed time and space to enjoy his lunch; Jackie was very empathetic to those needs. First class … we’ll be back.

We were visiting Cirencester today 23/03/25 and met our daughter and partner there, they needed to go home but recommended the Malt & Anchor for lunch. Superb we enjoyed every mouthful, well worth a trip from Royal Wootton Bassett for fish and chips in future. Jackie our server was great, friendly and attentive.

Fabulous food and quickly served. We were looking for a quick lunch whilst shopping in Cirencester. The food and drinks were served really quickly, extraordinary good and we definitely recommend the Malt and Anchor to anyone visiting Cirencester.

Visited after seeing that they were in the top 10 in the uk, could not recommend enough, the portions are perfect and you definitely get what you pay for. Had a lovely chat with our waitress Olivia about their craft beers, we loved them so much that we purchased some to give to friends as gifts. Will be back. Good luck in the awards malt and anchor
