An interesting place to visit, top tip for eating,if you dont want a restaurant meal the bar is really good food and value. All about you there are little bits of history from different era's, worth going for a drinkin there even if just to look arround.

Thank you for your review. The Mermaid was rebuilt in 1420, and the restaurant sits at the heart of the medieval building, offering a unique ambience within which to dine. We welcome guests to discover The Mermaid, and all her stories. More

excellence in every way, great value for this standard of food, service and location. One of the oldest restaurants in Rye, if not the oldest!

I last visited The Mermaid 25 years ago and still hold fond memories of that occasion so it was with some anticipation that we booked for dinner there on our recent visit to Rye. Whilst the building may be extraordinary our evening sadly wasn't. We opted for a drink in the small bar beforehand which was quite busy with locals... More

We too feel disappointed. We look forward to reading reviews, to receive affirmation or to receive constructive feedback to support future guest experiences. Your review characterises The Mermaid as: 1. The Bar is a wild west saloon crossed with an aircraft cabin. Reality: At about 6.45pm a resident in the bar, accidentally knocked over a glass. 2. Our waiters are... More

A very old and atmospheric dining room of which some of the dishes on the menu didn't really match. I had a superb Dover sole but my wife's lamb cutlets came with a curry jus. Can't fault the blackberry soufle for desert and the wine choice although small was well balanced.

Thank you for your review. So glad you discovered The Mermaid, rebuilt in 1420, and full of historic charms. We were pleased you enjoyed the Dover Sole, though sadly the Trio of Romney Marsh Lamb with Potato Mille-Feuille, Jerusalem Artichoke Puree, Poached Apricots, Fine Beans & Curry Jus was not to your wife's taste. We hope you found a wine... More

Lovely dining room full of character. Delicious smoked haddock chowder to start which was more of a cream soup than a pure chowder but none the worse for it. Mains of a pork loin and scallops followed; both competently cooked. Service was helpful and sincere rather than clipped and overly professional. Altogether a pleasant meal in lovely surroundings.

We visited the mermaid inn as part of a weekend stay in Rye. Heard alot about the place and thought it would be nice to dine there. Good wine list and we opted for the beef cheek and gnocchi to start. Both extremely small portions with very little flavour. We then had the pheasant as a main to share. It... More

Thank you for your review. We have discussed your review. We are perplexed. We strive to meet guest’s expectations, and if we do not, we encourage guests to talk to us, so we can understand. We read your review, and saw you rated The Mermaid Restaurant as average, however you used the adjectives diabolical and unforgettable. You praised our wine... More

I always laugh when reviews start with comments about the nice atmosphere etc - food is why you go to a restaurant and after that everything is a bonus. The food at the Mermaid is just amazing, great taste, quality ingredients with that freshness that only comes from a good kitchen. The staff were really friendly, took time to explain... More

Being such a historic inn we had to give it a try. The food was very average due to excellent produce being poorly cooked. I felt the main failing was the ambience. The lighting need a thorough overhaul to establish an atmosphere. LEDs are too savage a light without good shades. The bar in particular seemed fusty and drab with... More

Ambience......can we suggest you look at our Facebook page and watch the video of the restaurant, featured by BBC South East Today. Then please go to our website and watch the 360 degree video of The Mermaid including the restaurant and Bar. Then maybe reconsider the use of the adjectives in your review. The next time you are in Rye,... More
