Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

While many of the eateries in the Main Street at Pokeno are focused on fried food and ice cream (clearly the specialty of this town), just around the corner is a wee character cottage which offers something a little healthier. The signs say “sushi” but while there are lots of sushi choices, the menu includes other options, and there are also some Pākehā type options like roasted sandwiches and rolls in the cabinet. We chose to eat at a table out on the verandah, looking out to the lawn and trees that surround the cottage. Being off the main road, it is quieter here, and - as the name suggests - in a small, character cottage. We went for the pork ramen and salmon and avocado sushi. Not particularly environmentally friendly with ramen coming in a plastic bowl with plastic spoon and sushi likewise in plastic container; it would be good to see them offer meals on standard, reusable plates and in bowls. But if it is a relaxed quiet space you are looking for, this could be the place for you.

Very helpful, friendly staff (owner?).We didn't check out the blackboard till later and saw some tasty-sounding Asian dishes!I am gluten and dairy free and ordered from the sushi menu-freshly made to order.Hubby enjoyed a croissant and good coffee. Will make this a regular stop.Plum crumble looked delicious and there was a sweet g/f option.

This is a very small and cute place for a quick coffee or bite. Don't go here looking for a large place or some special pandering like a toilet but if all you want is some great coffee and tasty food, then it is worth a visit. On a trip, all I often want is a good coffee, maybe a muffin or scone and carry on to my destination. This will do that nicely.

Worth stopping at this 'Little Cottage Café' in the little town just one minute off SH1 - why stop at the busy Motorway Services when you can rest in such pleasant surroundings. Excellent coffee, snack food and Sushi. Spotlessly clean with helpful friendly owners.

As per the title, the if you want good coffee and nice food this is the best place to go. It's not with the main shops but worth walking the extra 50 metres if you are after something other than ice-cream.

This is indeed a little cottage. A very small room with one(?) table and counter very close behind it. The food in the viewing cabinet looked nice. The lady staff member looked a little flustered /busy doing an order for the four at the table but was friendly. I self served a cookie and left. A couple were sitting on the small veranda having a drink. I sat down at one of the picnic tables outside in the very big grassed area. The sun had finally come out from days of rain and the birds were very vocal. It was lovely except for the derelict house directly across the street. The little hedge will be handy once it's grown 5-6 feet. The macadamia cookie turned out to be soft and very buttery. No bin (that I saw) for my rubbish.
