This is a perfect stop for getting ice cream while on a road trip. Try the homey pokey flavor for a unique taste of New Zealand. This is just an open market type stop or as they call it in New Zealand, a take away.

Always stop here when we go past the township. It's compulsory to stop for a ice cream ;) They have ice creams up to 12 scoops 😋 and over 40 flavors :)
There other food like hot chips and fish are nice too. They're always friendly even when they're busy.

There was a long queue when we stopped which would suggest it's good, and it is. The service was good and quick and the prices for the ice cream were great. So may options of old and new tip top flavours.

Must-visit at Pokeno Original Icecream, on Auckland-daytrip, or roadtrip: first-icecream enroute south & last-icecream on the return. Huge choices make it hard to pick, always generous serve, bigger, brighter cafe now. Queues could be long, efficient staff make light work; happy customers licking huge array of flavours, outside. (I have gait/walking challenges (stroke), wear a legbrace.) Very good prices, quick service, have wondered about 9 or 11-scoop or more, advertised; one of these days! - will visit again soon.

The ice cream no doubt is the best price but had to wait so long to be served simply because everyone kept pushing in (always busy) but the person behind the counter saw us standing in the queue and kept serving everyone jumping ahead. So annoyed till another lady served us meanwhile the others (Asians) kept screaming for her attention

The tradition of stopping at Pokeno for a huge, cheap ice-cream lingers. There is not really any other reason to stop here now that the motorway bypasses Pokeno but it is totally worth the small effort and time to pop in to Pokeno for the ice-cream.
I must give huge accolades to the staff. The shop is NEVER quiet, there are always heaps of people there but the staff are friendly and efficient and work the counters incessantly. They must be so tired at the end of the day and happy to shut the doors.
As everyone notes, the ice-creams are huge and cheap. I had two generous scoops and a waffle cone and it cost $3.50. Just goes to show the mark-up in other places. And while most of the ice-cream is Tip-Top, there are also other makes as well. The selection is huge and the major issue is choosing. You can even get your ice-cream chocolate dipped just like the old days!
If you fancy an ice-cream, there’s no better place to stop than Pokeno. They deserve your visit.

Absolutely a kiwi tradition! Good ol’ icecream scoops on a cone :) Huge selection to choose from. We had 1x scoop $2, 2x scoop $3 - generous size scoop, well worth it!

We stopped by Pokeno for some ice cream on Saturday and it was delicious! Waffle cones were nice, huge selection of flavors and big scoops! Worth the price for sure. We’ll be back!

Towards the end of a trip to the Botanic Gardens, we were about to stop for an ice cream until my sister-in-law stopped us. She wanted to take us to a great value ice cream shop in Pokeno. I'm so glad she did. The queues were immense but the staff were doing a brilliant job serving the hugest scoops of a wide variety of flavours for a fraction of the price in an average mall parlour. I had a double scoop of mint with Oreo and Liquorice Allsort. An odd combination I know but where else am I likely to find Liquorice Allsort flavour ice cream? It was delicious.

I use to come here as a kid whenever my family & I would travel South of Auckland to any destination for a yummy, affordable ice cream.
Since I live in Australia now and was travelling past, I just had to stop to take my kids to share a memory with them.
Ice cream prices are on the picture of the poster I took.

It’s like these guys are riding on the success of a good reputation - however the ice creams have shrunk to a disappointing serving size. Paerata dairy now defines a good ice cream

It was fine. Apart from the food and how processed everything is. It was allgood sitting the shelter they had provided, when this rude employee came abruptly and tolld us to "GET OUT< WERE CLOSED" we asked for five minute because it was raining and we just started eating and we had kids with us !!!! five minutes is all we asked , but she refused even that and carried on with her rude attitude. it was all just rude. rude. no consideration. no warning. puru rudeness!

This is one of the two takeaway shops on the main road. It was hard to find what they sell here aside from the ice cream. The menu was hidden to the side. They do have quite a lot of seating though on the side of the shop.

Various taste, delicious ice cream, plenty of choices, and cheap. One scoop for $2, two scoops for $3, and more and more until 12 scoops for $14. A truly place to spoil ice cream lovers. Two shops side by side and both claim the original one. It does not matter, because the ice cream is coming from one source, Tip Top ice cream. One of them named Pokeno Ice Cream & Coffee Shop. The difference is the way they serve the customers, and you choose yourself which one is better. I chose marshmallow coconut and and rum raisin in a cone here.
