Food was good but not great. I read it was better than Schwartz's but this is not the case. Was nice to be able to sit down and relax but it's clear now to me that Schwartz's smoked meat is better. Service was very cold and unfriendly. I will not return.

Smoked meat is very good and alternative to across the street lineups. I'd advice to get latkes instead of fries!

This is an interesting menu based on traditional smoked meats and deli foods. My husband read a New York Times article that this was Leonard Cohen's favorite restaurant and off we went. He had the smoked meat spaghetti - very interesting! I had pierogies and borscht soup. Both were good, but when the waitress asked if I wanted boiled or... More

Theoretically, The Main is a very good place to eat. I say theoretically, because they refused to make eye contact, or take an order for ages after we sat down, and after 20 minutes waiting in vain we had to leave. They clearly didn't want to serve us despite us having done nothing wrong. Haughty, arrogant, and doomed to fail... More

If you'd like to taste the real smoked meet this is the place. The waiter was really nice and helpful to us and advised us to order a plate to share along with fries and a salad. One of the best dishes we've had. Delicious taste! Also the beer is awesome!

I went there for supper and had their smoke meat sandwich special. This is one of the last places left in Montreal that serves authentic smoke meat. Their regular sandwich is huge, nicely smoked, the old fashion way - Quality. I have been eating smoke meat for 50 years and I know what real smoke meat is. The Main has... More

"Mmmmm, this incredible! Schwartz's might be different than this, but it cannot be better than The Main." That's what I said while enjoying the smoked meat sandwich at this cosy deli... the well-established wait staff are up on the walls in caricature form, a framed newspaper article attests to this being Leonard Cohen's favourite deli and you leave totally filled... Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighbourhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colourful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
