Having recently been in Paris we came here hoping for a similar bistro experience, unfortunately it didn't quite work out that way. The service was good and friendly, but the food was very average and (in my opinion) over-priced. We started with the escargots hoping for the traditional garlic/butter sauce, but these were swimming in a bowl of artichoke sauce.... More

After Toronto and fine dinning in very expensive restaurants, In Montreal we decided to take it easy and have what we've thought would be more authentic and less expensive. Cannot really brand Le Grand Comptoir as cheep but after dinning there with 2 small kids for 3 night, we found it very reasonably priced. All our 3 waiters were very... More

What a fine, right next to the busy shopping street of St Catherine's, traditional French bistro, very good value send excellent service. We had the meal of the day, the soup was delicious as was the casserole, very tender meat, you could eat it with a spoon. An enjoyable evening

This has been a go-to spot for me for many years. Excellent French bistro food, good affordable wine selection, solid pleasant service and portions that won't make you uncomfortable. I'm a big fan of the potage that is served with most meals. If you visit in the colder months the cassoulet is really delicious.

We went for dinner before a concert with a large group and the restaurant was very responsive on email and we added and adjusted our booking a number of times. The food was delicious and service was great. Nice bottles of wines suggested. The food is a bistro type style and was very tasty.

Ate here twice this trip...as good as it was 5 years ago.this is a great little place (includes outside seating) with a really traditional french canadian bistro menu. prices are very good also, so you can have a good meal and feel you had good value. the twin duck legs with frites, the appetizers, beer and wine....absolutely great! the owner,... The 'plat du jour' was potage aux legumes with veal canneloni. The soup was almost like pea soup - average at best but the veal canneloni was very tasty. Avoid the tarte tartin - not up to expected restaurant quality. Service was exceptional. Quiet outdoor setting next to Square Phillip and abusy pizza shop.

Four of us stopped in for drinks and appetizers while we decided what to do next. The escargot was out of this world. Our server, Antonio, was terrific. We also had the smoked salmon and the goat cheese salad. The food and the service were so good, we stayed for dinner. The owner is delightful. I hope to return to... More

We were served by the owner/manager. The food options were wide and typical French Bistro offerings. The poutin served to us was a mouthwatering treat not to be missed. The other dishes we ate were above averaged and well priced.

Staying in Centre-Ville (Downtown)

Neighbourhood Profile
Centre-Ville (Downtown)
Montreal's towering skyline is concentrated in the Downtown area, its nexus of commerce and commercialism. A suffusion of luxury hotels, flagship stores, high-end restaurants, and corporate headquarters characterize the neighborhood, which by nightfall transforms from a business district into a youth-culture hotspot, with hip bars, clubs, and restaurants heavily peopled by students and young professionals. The once-seat of millionaire's 'Golden Square Mile', an incongruity of stately mansions and dapper brownstones sit between glass skyscrapers, creating a visually lush urban landscape. Beneath the sidewalks lay the Underground City, the world's largest below-ground mall, a labyrinth of over 1,500 shops and eateries that echo the profusion of cafes, gallerias, cinemas, and fashion outlets above. From the scholarly array at McGill University to the carousing crowds of Rue Crescent, visit Downtown to shop by day for what you'll wear there by night.
