Went to Thanjai with a friend who had been several times before and loved it. Their specialty is dosa - crisp, thin crepes filled with your choice of fillings. We went for a lamb masala and a vegetable. Appetizers were also good, deep- fried vegetables in a batter and lamb fritters a little more doughy than I had expected. Chutneys... More

Food was very good. I had the chicken curry which was not oily like most India curries are. Everyone enjoyed their food. The ambience, however, disappointed us given the price. The ceiling had a huge plaster repair, and the whole place looks tired. There are some really bad tables at the back. The noise level is really high. I recommend... More

If your mainly vegetarian and love South Indian marquee dishes like Dosa, Vada, Bhajji, Idli, Poori, Pongal and other delicacies, this is the place to visit. Situated in the heart of Montreal with easy access, you can enjoy all the authentic South Indian dishes at a decent price. Service is little slow but enthusiastic. Hosts are mostly students from local... More

The food from Thanjai is delicious, but there's often issues with the service... Was there at 4pm on a Sunday: The first persons meal arrived quickly, but 40mins later the second meal was still missing. The kitchen was probably busy preparing the two 6foot dosa for the people at the next table, but that shouldn't be an excuse for a... More

Reasonably priced very good South Indian food in a casual environnement. The waiters were all very energetic, helpful and smiley. We had no reservation on a Saturday night but they accommodated us. Better reserve though as the place is packed. It is bring your own wine or beer. The food seemed authentic (disclaimer: I have never been in India but... More

I've been here so many times with family and friends and will come back Clean place Courteous service with a smile Decent prices Almost no waiting time either if you are there for a takeout or you are seated at a table Wishes: should also include the North Indian naan (even though their dosas are really good) - this will... The dosas and idlis are truly authentic, and the coconut chutney and sambar (accompaniments) tasted homemade and wonderful. I organized a dinner for 16 people at Thanjai (a mix of backgrounds, including us Indians who know the cuisine). Everyone loved the food. And the 6 foot dosa was a hit! We will definitely be back.

The dosas were very good, close to what I have tried in India. Reasonably priced food and very friendly wait staff. Staff went out of their way to explain the menu as it was our first time to the restaurant.

I have tried a number of Montreal Indian restaurants over the years, and have become disenchanted with my previous favorites. A Sri Lankan friend recommended Thanjai to us, and we are very excited to have tried it, and we'll be back! It was Boxing Day, so we made a reservation, which once we got there didn’t really seem as though... More

Description
Authentic South Indian cuisine is nowhere near as popular as North Indian food in Montreal simply because of shortage, but Kumaresan Muthukrishnan and his wife Geetha are determined to shed some light on the staples as they grew up eating with their restaurant.
Dosas, idlis, bondas, uttapams … while these words appeal to South Indians longing for a taste of home, they also arouse the curiosity of Montreal restaurant goers looking to discover new facets of Indian cuisine.

Thanjai, Montreal’s first authentic South Indian restaurant, fulfills both these desires. It is comfortingly familiar to the Desi community who have made it their second home. Furthermore, it is the first to expose Montreal foodies to Indian gastronomy beyond the more ubiquitous cuisine of the North.
Hailing from the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Thanjai’s dishes offer Montrealers the opportunity to sample the healthy, vibrant flavours of South India. Favouring the use of different spices over excessive oil, South Indian cuisine satisfies taste buds while minding waistlines!

Today a resounding success, Thanjai has a come a long way from its humble beginnings as a 10-seat counter on Victoria Avenue. Since 2012, its more spacious location on Van Horne Avenue has introduced even more people to such delicacies as the tangy Chicken 65, the crispy Masala Dosa, the fluffy idli and the fragrant Hyderabadi-style biryani. It is also the one and only restaurant in North America to offer a 6-foot dosa – and it can be ordered anytime!

With enough seats to accommodate 70 and an 80-100 capacity private hall, Thanjai invites you to partake in this sumptuous South Indian feast!
