We stayed at the Auberge du Vieux-Port last weekend and, because it was so cold outside, decided to have breakfast at the Taverne Gaspar. What a great find. The Quebecois breakfast is only 10$ and the portion held us over until dinner. They serve large mugs of hot fresh coffee. Excellent quality food and value. Because we had such a good experience in the morning, we stopped in for drinks. The bartender was friendly and happy to recommend a cocktail. He even passed by to check and see if we were happy with his recommendation. All the staff are friendly and welcoming. There is a genuine friendliness exuding from the staff that you don't want to miss. It's like they're sincerely happy that you're there.

Although affiliated with a hotel Taverne Gaspar has its own personality. Our hostess was very acccommodating and placed us in a very comfortable corner location. This made our ability to converse during the meal and better enjoy the cosy atmosphere. We stared off with shared plates of olives and cheeses followed by a variety of salads including Caesar & spinach. Entrees included steak, seafood and pasta all of which were presented in a very exqusite manner which matched the flavors one expects from a five star reataurant.. Without a doubt a restaurant to be enjoyed over and over.

While I traditionally favour a vegan-friendly diet, this was the place to let loose and ravage myself in tasty, filling, yet savoury, meat dishes, which appropriately accented the ‘tavern’ atmosphere of the restaurant. My waitress, Melissa, was lovely, her recommendations for wine and entrees were apt and poignantly likened to my hard-headed tastebuds—felt like I had known her for years. I will certainly be back when I have time off for another trip.

I had many choices and went back and forth with many of them. I landed on “Tavern Gaspar” mainly because of the reviews found on trip advisor. It may age to assume that my experience is the exception and not the rule. The page on the app had an open table button for making a reservation, I took that to mean this place must be good because it’s hard to get into! It was definitely packed, and the only seat available was at the bar. I was drinking so I figured service wouldn’t be a problem. Not so fast! The bartender was informative about what was on-tap and the dinner specials. They were having a all inclusive dinner for $25. The soup was good, not great. The Burger was dry but tasty, the fries were made about three hours ago, and the kitchen was so exited that finally “a sucker” showed up to take them off of their hands! Atmosphere was inattentive, the app said they had WiFi when I asked for it the bartenders response was as if I was asking for her phone number (she never came back) when she did it never came up again. They had the Raptors game on one of the televisions (there was at least two) and some other waitperson came and changed, and when I told her I was watching the game she said that Hockey is more popular here! The desert was creme’ brûlée (it was part of the special) I wanted to get out of there by now but it’s made in a dish that I can’t take with me. When it arrived you could tell that it was in the refrigerator, because it was cold with no crustal all. I hope this will help someone not make the same mistake that I did!

The busboy spilled french onion soup all over the table and came back to sort of clean the top of the table. We had to ask the bartender to ask the waiter to get the busboy to come back with a mop to clean the floor., which took a good ten minutes. There was still soup all over the side of the table and we finally found a cloth and spray can ourselves to clean up the rest of the mess. We were not offered a credit or compensation for the soup, which our son finally received another twenty minutes later. The food we ordered was fine, but for the price and the service, and as Montrealers who often dine out in high end restaurants, we will not be coming back.

This is my first review on Tripp Advisor but this place is so great I had to write in. We brought a party of 40-50 people from Chicago for lunch while we were in Montreal for a hockey tournament. After WE accidentally scheduled our reservation on the wrong date, they offered to open the restaurant at a time that they are normally closed just to accommodate us!!! The location was perfect, and the service was unbelievable. Friendly and helpful. AND THE FOOD WAS WONDERFUL!! Our party had a choice of ribs, burgers, fish and chips and a few other things. I had the fish and chips and it was amazing. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. If I am ever back in Montreal I am going back for sure!!!

Our family which gathered in Montreal for a reunion had dinner here. There was enough range for each of us to be delighted in our choices. I had the Shepherd's pie which was actually duck and mashed sweet potatoes! The portions were generous. Each meal was prepared the way it was requested - we had some in our party who had special requests. The service was arm and friendly and very attentive The ambience was great and reflects the vibe of Old Town. On a cold winter's night it was warm and cozy and lively. We had the special fiery roulette drink explained on a chalkboard above the bar and it was theater, too! Great Fun

Our family stopped in at Taverne Gaspar on a Sunday morning for lunch and discovered that they had a brunch menu which suited us fine. Located in the old port of Montreal the restaurant itself is in a very old building and the decor inside was just fabulous. We were promptly seated and our waitress was very nice and accommodating throughout our meal. We ordered a breakfast poutine, an avocado toast with poached egg, an eggs Benedict and an order of ribs. Unfortunately from the time that we ordered our meals to when they were served it took just over an hour. Yes the restaurant was busy but this seemed a little excessive. To make matters worse two of the meals, the ribs and avocado toast arrived cold. We advised our waitress of this and she was very apologetic and arranged to have both those meals prices reduced by 50% which was fair. The servings were generous and the taste of all the meals was very good other than the two dishes coming out cold. Although not certain I suspect the kitchen may have been short staffed which would explain our issues. The Taverne Gaspar is a beautiful Restaurant with great wait staff but unfortunately in our case the food didn’t meet our expectations.

The staff service, food and overall feel was great here! We stay at the connecting hotel which we also enjoy. We had apps late afternoon and then had breakfast the next morning before heading out. The guy that served us breakfast also cooked us breakfast and was super attentive. Excellent experience. We all enjoyed our food. the breakfast poutine was awesome!

We visited Taverne Gaspar with a large group and the team could not be more accommodating. The atmosphere is fantastic, the food is excellent, it is in a great location right in old Montreal and most importantly the service was some of the best I've received at any restaurant. Highly recommended. Thank you David and Julie and all the servers.

Probably our least favorite restaurant in MTL, and not to say it was bad, just not good as anything else. The crew here was pretty nice and the food was not that bad, I got the beef tartare but I didn't really care for it, and the drinks were badly watered down for the price we were paying. We did sit outside on the patio and the view and seeing everything from there was very nice. Understand this is a very touristy spot so I am not upset about it and I didn't expect to be blown away.

A complete disappointment. The restaurant was excessively loud. The staff were unfriendly and impatient. They barely took the time to serve us. Our food was underwhelming. We paid $3.50 for 4oz glass of club soda with ice. My husband's steak was a poor cut and it came with 3 tiny asparagus sprears. All served at tepid temperature. My fish was greasy and fries dry/hard. I couldnt even finish my meal. Not sure why this place is so highly rated. I definitely don't recommend eating here.

It was a busy night when we arrived and we were glad to have a reservation. The restaurant was participating in the MTL a Table price fix three course menu so we ordered from that. The French onion soup, lamb and cake was delicious! Since it was busy we did wait a looong time for our entrees but would still recommend this spot in Old Montreal .

We stopped in for a couple drinks and some food on a Tuesday night and we were really impressed with the friendly, warm atmosphere. My husband had the Cider and I had a couple of their local Craft Beers. The bar staff were great and engaging. We had the Risotto for dinner, and it was incredible. Pricing was really good for the area. We really enjoyed our evening here and will definitely be back.

Our server was very poor. It took us 1 hour to get our food and she would not come back and check for drinks etc. I had fish & chips and it was too heavy and oily. The portion size and the quality of the fish was good, but I felt sooo uncomfortable after eating it because of the oil and I did mot even finish it. The ambiance is nice, it would not go back for a meal, maybe only drinks..
