We saw this place on the Food net work and wanted to give it a try on our next visit to Toronto. We are very glad we did. The smoked meat was fantastic. We tried both the corn beef and smoked meat hands done the smoked meat was better. Both were excellent. Fries crispy and the latkes good but greasy.... More

Amazing smoked meat sandwiches. Delicious shoestring fries. Tasty pickles. Fast friendly service and good prices. Ice cold draft beer served with a pickle spear. Bottles of ice cold water replenished often. What more could you ask for?

Despite what you have read in the news, Caplansky's is still open. Evidently landlord dispute continues. We had poutine with smoked meat. What a treat. Their classic Reuben was very good too. You can get cream soda but not celery. Nothing fancy about this spot but the food makes up for the 'sorry' atmosphere.

Politely asked waiter to change tv channel to Euro game, was rudely told no. He proceeded to tell me I was annoying, I didn't get out much and to leave. He was unprofessional, obnoxious and rude.

Their maple syrup is just plain table syrup. This disappointment is overshadowed by their great menu and mustard varieties. Just don't fall for the maple syrup claims like I did.

I really enjoyed the smoked meat lunch sandwich, I got it with the matzah ball soup. I think it's one of the best smoked meat sandwiches I've ever had, it was a great size for a lunch. The patio is also really nice in the summer.

Add a beautiful summer day and then order lunch. In our case, smoked meat sandwiches with really good fries. The menu covers every deli staple so it is hard to choose. Everything we had was top notch, fresh, hot, goodly portion. Service was pleasant, competent and professional. For Deli food, this is it in Toronto. Prices not bad either.

This place can hold its own in a city of great restaurants. They do what they do very well. I visited the College Street location by streetcar on a hot dusty afternoon. The service was welcoming and professional. The regular sized smoked meat sandwich was excellent and washed down very nicely by a local beer. Drop by if you're within... More

I've been to Schwartz's Deli in Montreal and Carnegie Deli in NYC and sorry, there's NO comparison. On top of it I was blessed with the bum of the rye bread, which made my Reuben more like a slider than a sandwich. Not good value. Just an ok sandwich. Really disappointed and will never be going back. Ever.

Our table had breakfast and lunch options and it was all awesome. Sit outside if you can, there's plenty of shade and the staff are great. The Ruebenesque is perfect, don't change a thing when ordering it. Try all the mustards that are on the tables!

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
