The Black Thorn is closed while the National Capital Commission erects a new building at 7 Clarence Street. The popular Brunch menu is now available at the Earl of Sussex (same owner) on Sussex and Murray Street.

Yes, we are closed for the time being but we hope to re-open before the Fall of 2016. The plan as of right now is late Spring 2016. Thanks for mentioning the Brunch at Earl of Sussex. It is indeed the exact same Brunch Menu we were serving at The Black Thorn Cafe. See you in the Spring! More

I enjoyed coming to the thorn after work. Decent beer and friendly staff. Sadly, it is closed. Another victim to Ottawa's emerging culinary scene.

Hi Pierre, Thanks for the kind words in your review. We are indeed closed but only temporarily. The planned reconstruction of 7 Clarence next door made it impossible to stay open. We are using this opportunity to make some exciting improvements in the kitchen as well as adding a universally accessible washroom on the main floor. We hope to be... More

We stopped in for lunch one afternoon and were promptly seated i back in the lovely and shaded courtyard. We asked for two iced teas but they didn't have that, however the server suggested hot tea with large glasses of ice. Ok, it worked for us. We then ordered the Peppercorn Steak pizza and it was delicious. Cremini mushrooms, marinated... More

There are dozens of restaurants and bars in the Byward Market but this one is a pretty sure bet for good food. The menu is interesting and there is a great selection of beers. The outdoor dining area looks out on a quiet courtyard and there is plenty of room inside for cooler weather dining. It's close to the National... More

the man who greeted us did not respond well, he offered a limited menu, we stopped at the entrance for a few minutes ... after a very kind woman gave us access, clarified our doubts and served a delicious duck. Limete salad was sooo good. I ordered a pisco and had never proven with pineapple and jalapeno ... I didn´t... More

We stopped here to meet a friend and were shocked by the food. We both had burgers (we are usually scared of bad pub food); 1 veggie, 1 angus with salad, and they were delicious. I highly recommend trying their fries (rosemary and sea salt!!!!) as our friend ordered those and they are great to share! Enjoy

We discovered The Black Thorn one night by accident when the other restaurant we were going to was closed. It was a happy accident as we discovered a place with great atmosphere and very eclectic food that tasted fantastic

Best potato, asparagus & bacon soup served after 2:00 unless you know the bartender. Cute, historical building within easy walking distance of the Byward Market & Art museum.

Nice, cozy cafe/pub in Byward Market. I was traveling solo and was treated quite nice by staff. I enjoyed a pizza, which was very good.
