Eat here often when visiting from Toronto. Amazingly food has improved - big time. Try the spot prawns for sure - delicious - you can eat the entire head, super crunchy.

Make your reservations since the restaurant is small. Get a seat at the sushi bar and say hello to the chef/owner, Sada-san. The menu is small and the daily specials on the blackboard are worth trying. The toro tasting is worth a try, so is yellow-tail belly sashimi and Foie gras nigiri. A very satisfying dining experience. Kudos to Sada-san... More

This restaurant is a must visit! It's small and the attention to detail is spot on! The food was so fresh and delicious! The staff is beautifully dressed and so pleasant. I can't say enough good things, just go! Make a reservation first!

I've eaten sushi world wide including at the Tsukiji market in Tokyo and this was comparable. Best sushi I've had in Canada and amongst the best anywhere. The ingredients are exceptionally fresh, high quality and expertly combined. There was literally nothing below excellent and we tried ma y menu items. The service was precise and friendly. We came all the... More

We made a reservation for omakase ($75/person) on a Friday evening. The restaurant is small and cozy. The octopus-themed decoration is over-killed and make the restaurant looks messy (or homey depending on how you look at it). It is not the place to go if looking for a high end or romantic dining experience. We were being seated in front... More

Everything is just average. sashimi is very fresh but it also reflects on price. The uni shooter is very very good though! I don't think I will go back anytime soon.

Went here recently after years of hearing about this place. We got the omakase, and it was the BEST sushi experience I've ever had. Sada-san spoiled us with a house special shooter, soup, sashimi, nigiri sushi, tuna fish, and dessert. It was truly an amazing experience, and worth every penny. A must try if you love sushi and are visiting... More

No question Octopus Garden is the best Japanese restaurant in Vancouver. I live in Tokyo but actually look forward to Chef Sada's omakase once a year. It is exquisite and far more creative than kaiseki courses in Japan, though I enjoy that as well. He is a lovely man who loves cooking, creating and serving. There are quirky little trinkets... If you want a true "knock-off-your-socks" experience try it. There is only one choice: small...75$ or large...more$...per person. Of course you need to be a tad adventurous, but the reward will be ecstasy! Make sure you sit at the counter. Enjoy

Went to partake in chef Sada's stellar sushi at octopuses garden. I didn't have a reservation but one of the two servers sat me at the sushi bar. Both servers were dressed in traditional kimonos and added to the ambiance. I went with the uni shooter, assorted sashimi, nigiri sampler and some nigiri Ala carte. I also tried Orion beer... More

Staying in Kitsilano

Neighbourhood Profile
Kitsilano is one of Vancouver's most transformative neighbourhoods. With a long history of coffee culture and poetry readings, its days of flower children and buskers may be long-gone, but not without leaving their mark on the number of organic restaurants and fair-trade cafes in the area. At the centre of Kitsilano ("Kits" for short) the almost idyllic expanse of Kits Beach offers the opportunity for a relaxed afternoon of beach volleyball or sunbathing. Along with the beachfront, nearby public pools and trendy street-beats have driven up the homeowners prices, making it a haven for stylish home goods stores, from design and furniture, to supplies and appliances. The multitude of both families and public spaces also make it a happening neighbourhood in the summer, when festivals and fairs take to Kits' streets.
