What a huge disappointment. We were excited to hear that the pub had new owners and were doing a much needed renovation. We live in the neighbourhood so it would be great to have a local pub with good atmosphere and great food and service. I have heard from others the food and service was terrible, but thought I should... More

We had enjoyed the Black Bear Pub in the past. They used to have good pub ambiance, with great food. Sadly that is all gone now. The new owners have removed the large fireplace that stood in the center of the room and now it is just an empty box with deafening noise. With only 12 tables occupied, the noise... More

My brother and I were in Nanaimo as "out of towners" in for a death in the family. We used to frequent this pub for their fantastic Halibut. What we got tonight was completely dreadful. They removed the Halibut and replaced it with Cod. The battered fish was soggy and nowhere near what we used to take our parents out... More

I had the fish and chips special, substituted 1/2 fries for 1/2 salad and was thrilled with the presentation. It was yummy too. Everything was fresh, high end veggies in the salad, great coleslaw.

Great neighborhood pub. Literally tucked away in a quiet little neighborhood you wouldn't expect it to be. First time there. Tasty food. Great prices!

We arrived for lunch on a weekday--promptly greeted by a more than friendly and knowledgeable wait person. Split the poutine and the sliders--more than enough for two people ! And filling !! Even the slider buns are made from scratch. Whomever owns the Black Bear Pub knows how to market--daily drink and food specials; monthly draws and a special menu... More

We went to this place with friends from Nanaimo as it had just been renovated. They should have done something with the upholstery and rugs as it had that stale smoke smell. The food was good and the waitress was friendly. I think they are still getting used to new owners. Our friends said the hamburgers were dry, my quesadilla... More

Took my old dad for pub lunch. Got there at 1:00 pm.( 2 other patrons in the place, should have known) got a burger, my dad got soup and sandwich. I asked for no lettuce on his sandwich. I got a bacon burger with 3 raw slices of bacon, semi cooked frozen burger on a stone cold bun which hours... More

Tonight we decided to try the black bear pub on a whim. Haven't been in years and honestly no one in our circle talks about it so we kind of forgot about it. Our waitress was quick to give us menus and our waters but that was about it. We sat looking at our menus for a couple minutes then... More

The pub was empty for a reason. Overpriced beer. Lack of menu options/variety. Weird ambiance. Most importantly, moldy cucumber in my very odd salad. Im not talking a bit of mold, several huge rotting MOLD spots. Yum! Will NEVER go back EVER again. The brand new server was friendly though! Yikes, these guys should fold now and close shop!

We took over the business at The Black Bear Pub last February, and since then the pub has undergone a few minor surgeries, and changes to the menu. In the nearing future we plan to change a few more minor things and hopefully you guys can come along with us for the ride... Gladys and her team at The Black Bear Pub are happy to be serving Nanaimo with some great food in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The Black Bear Pub has new ownership - great food, friendly & fun atmosphere - and yes, meat draws (almost every Saturday)! Every other Friday they have live bands come and play at the pub. Come on down for lunch, dinner, or a few drinks with friends.
