Our best dining experience in Oaxaca was at Hostería Alcalá. The service and food are wonderful, as well as the location. This is not the top rated restaurant in Oaxaca on TA, but it should be in the top 3. Enjoy!

We are so happy we found this restaurant! Fine dining in Oaxaca isn't difficult to find so this was a treat. the level of attention, covered courtyard w/fine art ambiance, quality wait staff, flavors - this place has it all. The meal was superb and nicely spaced between courses. We even opted for crepes suzette which was prepared table side... More
A lazy Sunday afternoon with crowds drifting along Alcala, we see a sign offering caldos -- soups. Though the sun is burning, a properly made caldo with lots of fresh vegetables strikes us as the dish with the correct weight. The servers (all male, white shirts, black pants) guide us to a table next to the plashing fountain, in the... More
beautiful courtyard off the street. first class restaurant great staff great food. became our favourite place while in Oaxaca
Concerned it might be one of those tourist stops, but not so when we were there. Very friendly and accommodating staff who eventually realised that we wanted lots of wine, excellent Mexican merlot at an excellent price. A very nice setting in an internal courtyard with an interesting but very pleasant set menu. As always an excellent soup, bright green,... More
We had late lunch today and it was excellent. Mole strong and flavorful. Shrimp coco an absolute delight. Shrimp moist and soft, sweetened just right. Both meals were twice the size a normal person could eat. Service attentive, staff pleasant, manager interested and helpful.
Four of us went here on Christmas day for dinner. The restaurant is in a pretty covered courtyard, and had a huge decorated christmas tree, and looked very pretty. The food was good, though overpriced, compared to other nearby restaurants. But our servers were unwelcoming and never cracked a smile the whole night. The overall experience felt hostile, and we would... More
Our guide recommended Hosteria de alcala and suggested we try the traditional Oaxacan dish tclayuda. The service was very good and the restaurant itself quite lovely. Unfortunately we found the tclayude inedible. I don't know if it was poorly prepared or what. We could not chew it.
We had breakfast here one morning, it was pretty good, and a great price. We ordered the large orange juice, not realizing it came in glasses similar to large margaritas at home - they definitely mean large! lol. I got the quesadillas, my husband got the cheese in milk, both were absolutely delicious and a great price.
