If this is your first mercado enjoy it - it's full of photo ops If you're here for the food - don't bother - it's bland and frankly every meal we've had there and that friends have had there has the same flavor as the canned beans we buy at La Comer. What this mercado has that makes it interesting... More

Certainly worth a visit and do try some of the delicious food stalls. We had pulled pork on delicious bread and tried some of the exotic fruits we never have in the States.

The entrance of the Mercado Hidalgo is impressive - a high arch of pink sandstone. Pass though and you find an arched metal roof, very high to permit some air flow. There are many different types of stalls selling cooking ingredients, fresh fruit and vegetables and meat. At the east end are many inexpensive eateries. We purchased some dried spices... More

OMG! You can find so many souvenirs here at the mercado! No need to shop anywhere else. They also have various eateries to choose from.

There are several places on the ground floor to buy cheese, coldcuts, meat, souvenirs, typical candies, fruit and vegetables, and places to sit and eat. There are a few stands which sell canned goods and there's even a locksmith. Outside on one side there are places which offer comida corrida, on the other side there are a few stands selling... This place doesn't really get going till about 11 in the morning. It's kind of like the Costco of Guanajuato for tourists. If you can't find the trinkets, baskets, t-shirts, etc. that you want here, you probably may not find them at all.

Lived in this city for fours years and this is by far the best place to eat a torta, choriqueso by far my favourite! Lovely busy market with plenty of fresh produce.

I did not buy any of the trinket-type souvenirs at the stalls. The food stalls were sort of crazy...there are attractive "hawkers" waving menus to draw you in. It seemed fun, but honestly, the food was average.

Ate some really good Sopa Ceviche (Shrimp Soup) and Milanese Pollo (Breaded Chicken thinly sliced). We got food from two different vendors, but they didn't seem to mind us having our food together and bringing back the dishes (the two places were right next to each other). We saved lots of money over eating at one of the restaurants nearer... More

Fresh meats and vegetables, cheesy, touristy handicrafts, and generally temporary tianguis around the edges. Not the best market in Mexico, certainly, but the building is spectacular and quite photogenic. Worth an hour, more if you're hungry.....there are tons of food stalls, all good, all cheap.
