We came upon this place by chance whilst on the back roads to Perth, Scotland. It is situated in the main street of Muthill and the attraction to us was that we could drive off the road through an archway and find parking at the back. Two coffees and 2 scones were a bit expensive at £11.00 but they were good and the waitress was pleasant and friendly.

I have also rated the hotel listing for the same establishment, including our meal experience, but thought it worthwhile to separately commend the restaurant specifically.
We booked a one-night stay with dinner and breakfast, but you can reserve a table even if you aren't staying overnight. I can honestly say, my meal was just delightful from start to finish. Fresh, seasonal, high quality ingredients put together in creative and complementary ways. Wonderful flavors, lovely presentation, excellent portion sizes.
The staff were attentive, courteous and friendly. The environment was cosy and intimate without ever feeling crowded. Good Covid-safety practices - felt safe but not in any way intrusive. I'd definitely recommend this as a treat for those who enjoy fine dining in a charming country setting.

Limited menu when we visited on Saturday. However food was delicious and service
Was excellent. Staff were very knowledgable about the menu and were attentive without being intrusive.
Given the quality of the cooking and a very reasonably priced wine list (the Albariño was excellent ) this was good value.
Will definitely return and would recommend .

My husband and I come to the area once or twice a year and always treat ourselves to lunch at the Barley Bree.
We booked for lunch and this time we were left disappointed.
There were some noticeable changes. The Prix Fixe lunch is still advertised under special offers (albeit 2019), with the menu now being a la carte. So instead of £17.50 for two courses it’s now around £7.50 for a starter and £12.95 for a main course.
Previously the home made bread was complimentary (now £3.95) and you used to get petits fours with the coffee (not any more!).
It’s not just about the cost though. The menu wasn’t fantastic either. There was a pigeon breast main course (we usually see this as a starter) and the chicken and mushroom pie was topped with a thin layer of potato, lacked pieces of mushroom and didn’t come with any veg or side dishes (another £3.95 if you want something with your main). The food itself was nice but just didn’t seem to represent value for money.
We realise businesses are having to recoup losses during lockdown but we felt that the experience for us as customers has been compromised as a result.
There were only two desserts on the menu, neither of which we fancied.
The service was still excellent though, with our server being really attentive, efficient and pleasant.
Sadly I don’t think we’ll be rushing back on our next trip to the area...

My partner and I were really disappointed with our recent trip to the Barley Bree. We had two main courses and a couple of drinks, costing just over £70 and it was decisively average. The meat seemed of poor quality and the portions exceptionally meagre. This wouldn't have been an issue should the food be its usual beautiful quality and execution, but it really felt below par with cheap meat and average vegetables. We could hear a microwave being set and used as we were sat very close to the kitchen (despite an empty restaurant), which really killed the ambiance.
It was a special evening for us and after such disappointing food we quickly moved on in a bid to save our evening, skipping dessert, cheese and drinks.
I contacted them after to express how disappointed we where and was sent a copy and past reply that did not address any of the concerns I raised (and addressed me wrongly). This was such a let down as usually the Barely Bree always go above and beyond to help; for example in the past they have sourced specific cheeses for us and always been very helpful and accommodating.
I'm sure you will still have a perfectly pleasant meal here but it is not the standard it used to be, and I do not think myself or my family will be returning, especially after such a poor response to my email. This is so disappointing as there are not many restaurants in the local area that served food of the same quality in such a lovely space, but it truly has lost its something special. Such a shame as we truly enjoyed it at the Barley Bree.

Excellent (as usual). From our time of arrival, on a pretty busy Sunday lunchtime, until our departure after a fine meal, Barley Bree still is one of our Scottish favourites. We have been coming here for about ten years, the ambience has always been a delight, the simple rustic decor excellent, the service tops and most importantly the cuisine to a very high standard. The portions are not huge but just right for us,a gin and tonic is roughly half the price I pay at my local in Surrey and a very potable house wine also well priced. I cannot recommend highly enough.

Sunday lunch having walked up the Knock and back we worked up a great appetite and had fortunately booked for today 15th March at 2.30, never dined here before and will surely return, very professional staff, excellent service food and wine. I’m not going to single out any dish we four all had three courses plus pre-lunch drinks a £30 bottle of wine and all for £154 wife and me shared a desert as we were full. At this rate won’t be long before we tried ALL Crief eateries. Tomorrow off to pitcrocknie trying a local eatery there.
Congratulations to all the staff and Chefs.

Have visited this excellent restaurant a couple of times in the last year and on both occasions have left a very satisfied customer.
The food is beautifully cooked and presented with excellent choices.
The service is excellent and and the fresh bread is absolutely delicious and I think it is excellent value for the quality of the food served.
It is a 50 mile drive to this restaurant but the food is exceptional so it is well worth the journey.
Very highly recommended and look forward to another visit soon.

I've been lucky enough to have been taken out to Sunday lunch here by my father 3 times in the last 6 months and each time my father, myself and our friends have had a truly delicious lunch with superb service. The food is outstanding and the staff are wonderful. This is a real gem and I recommend without reservation.

What an amazing find. The staff are absolutely outstanding and the food is as good as anything we’ve had at Michelin starred restaurants. The lamb was probably the best I’ve ever tasted.
Seriously good cuisine from a chef that is clearly on top of their game, serving up a fantastic menu of locally sourced dishes.

Had an amazing Sunday lunch today. Beautiful rustic ambience. Very friendly service and delicious food. Highly recommend and would most definitely return. My husband and two daughters had the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and I had the curried venison pie. Both were delicious and cooked beautifully. My husband had the liver parfait to start with and my daughters had sorbet and ice cream for dessert and I had the apple tarte tatin. Lovely 😋 Nothing was too much trouble and the staff were very attentive.

We booked the restaurant during the Easter holidays twice for our family of 5, being all vegetarians the restaurant team went above and beyond to make us happy. They had a special vegetarian menu and lots of daily specials to choose from.
The service is attentive, friendly and personalized. The food is amazing, you see there is love behind the kitchen, fresh local ingredients, the best food we had in Scotland during our 2 weeks holiday.
Next time we will for sure book rooms, such a lovely atmosphere.
This restaurant is a must go in Crieff.
Thank you for taking such good care of us and giving us memorable meals. 😊
Everything we tasted was delicious, from the starters, their amazing home made bread, the main courses and the dessert’s.
Just WOW!!!!

A special night out to celebrate Hogmanay with a wonderful 5 course taster menu of stunning and imaginative cuisine combining the best of French cooking with fantastic Scottish ingredients. Personal highlight was Parsnip Soup, served with Haggis, Rosemary and Chestnut Crumble. This was our first visit to Barley Bree - we will be back!

Had a Valentine’s Day overnight with dinner. Tremendous, the room was nicely decorated and cosy but it was our meal where the Barley Bree excelled, the food was out of this world. It was a 4 course menu which consisted of a wonderful butternut squash soup which couldn’t have been smoother, red mullet with samphire and wasabi, delicious, then duck a l’orange which I was looking forward to the least but was excellent. It was all finished with a chocolate and honeycomb tart with grapefruit sorbet which I absolutely loved. In my opinion it rivalled any Michelin restaurant I’d been to in the past. Will definitely be back.

Excellent Lunch for we two walk ins. It wasn’t busy despite being Saturday. Service brisk from a really sweet waitress; wonderful glass of wine to ponder the menu with four starters, four mains and four desserts. We chose a main and a desert and feasted on delicious homemade bread while it was cooked to order. The tarte tatin was a masterpiece and the espresso very fine too. Can’t fault it in any way, a perfect relaxing 90m which set us up to feel good for the rest of the day as we drove home through beautiful Perthshire countryside.
