This restaurant was recommended to us by John of Casa Blanca hotel where we stayed. We are so happy we went even if we waited a few minutes to get a table. The place was crowded with locals so we know it's a good restaurant. We ordered baked pork ribs, cube steak with onions and plantain tamale stuffed with pork... More

Disappointed we couldn't wait 2 hours for a table--our short stay via a cruise didn't allow for it. Will try the next time and yes, we'll return to San Juan ❤

Nothing fancy, simply the best meal and best value in Puerto Rico. Don't be put off by the decor, look at the faces of the people in the eating in the restaurant. The Masita de cerdo con salsa de platano is not to be missed. Watch out for the hot sauce, its a killer. It's less crowded at lunch, but... More

Read the reviews and decided on "El Jibarito". This is a quaint restaurant in a more residential area. Although many tourists were dining--thanks to Yelp and TripAdvisor I'm sure--many locals frequent this restaurant which i take as a good indicator. I had the Trifongo (lighter than the traditional "mofongo", it was tasty with a crispy outside and soft inside), and... More

Had some hours between flights so we took a taxi to Old San Juan. This restaurant was recommended by a National Park Ranger for being authentic PR food and reasonably priced. Absolutely. We highly recommend the beef stew, the chicken creole stew and the empanadas. The lemon-garlic stew was not as savory as the others, but wasn't bad. You must... More

We were told great Puerto Rican food here, but not true. An unpleasant waitress served us and food was mediocre for price. Would not go back.

We stopped here for lunch based on the recommendation of a local. Food was very authentic and delicious. We had empanadas to start, definetly preferred the beef over the chicken but both were yummy especially with the house sauce. The veal stew with vegetables was also delicious. It is away from the cruise ship, touristy atmosphere which is a definite... More

Great food. The beef empanadas were yummy and the sauces, one with a slight taste of curry, were a great accompaniment. Three others in our party had the chicken strips in creole sauce and it was delicious. Make sure to get a side of the yellow rice!

My friends and I went to El Jibarito off a couple of recommendations. Definitely a simpler restaurant in terms of decor but the food was the better authentic Puerto Rican food. we got the empanadas (a little disappointed they didn't have beef available) but the chicken was good. The white rice and red beans was VERY good. I also tried... More
