Northerlies is perfectly situated on a quiet, pristine beach away from the madding crowd. The menu is excellent, the meals and service exceeded expectations on what was a very busy day, and the staff are professional, courteous and well presented. We spend 3 glorious hours enjoying the gentle seabreaze, savouring the fare and the atmosphere, and enjoying the happy, relaxed vibe.

Thank you for sharing your Northerlies experience. You pretty much sum up the owners ideal vision - a chilled relaxed venue. Our goal always is to exceed expectations, and I am proud of the effort and commitment all staff achieve to ensure Northerlies is 'One Step Beyond'. We made the booking for two plus with the pram on 4:30pm which is empty just about to start to serve the dinner menu at 5pm. Unfortunately they put us next to the bar😱I was shocked would you be happy if they put a baby next to the bar and then they told us I am sorry there is no more table available but you are welcome to sit outside which is very windy and cloudy day. Until my husband go to speak with the manager not even a minute they came to grab me inside said they found the table for us and apologies their inconsideration. Well it seems they don’t care until you make a complain and then they will do something which is I don’t like to complain.
In general, The food was good and of course view was good but no wow like the other reviews says.
Would you be happy make the booking already plus driving 30 mins to the restaurant then got this experience? Or maybe I just had a bad luck?

We stayed three nights at Freedom Shores, the beach resorts where Northerlies is placed. Naturally we have been there 3 times. First of all, the location itself is great, with a huge, beautiful sea view. The resort is also amazing, within a very nice natural setting, and giving plenty of intimacy. There are not many dishes at Northerlies on their menu. Which is usually a sign for a great restaurant. Unfortunately, not all their dishes were top, for instance the beef stakes. But this is not to say that they do not know how to cook them. We had a fantastic picanha in one of the evenings, as well as great seafood and slow cooked lamb.
Sometimes they were out-of-stock for our favorites craft beers, but the wine cellar is top class.
Finally, the service was what downgraded them most. While the waiters were smiling, we could not ignore how slow, some of them, were in serving and not following-up with clients at the tables (they preferred to clutter around bar and kitchen, tending to ignore what was going on in the restaurant).
Would I go there again to eat? Of course, yes. There are so many positive things at Northerlies, just some flaws which leads them to settle for less than perfect.

What a disappointment. A once highly respected venue has made some disturbing changes. While charging “top dollar” the idea of serving entrees and mains together is just not good enough. Sub standard steaks poorly cooked. No care from staff, once delivered, no follow up. Local pubs far better.

This was probably the most disappointing place we visited during our stay at Airlie Beach. We were recommended by some friends who had been here and we honestly couldn’t understand why they loved it so much. It’s a very pretty venue, and the views are nice however they are far better at our own hotel and other locations in Airlie - the sun sets behind the restaurant!
For a $45 steak I expected something decent, but this was tasteless and chewy and I could cook one better myself. The peppercorn sauce was far too peppery and overall the meal was extremely disappointing.
The cocktails were average - the espresso martini tasted only of cafe patron and I actually couldn’t finish it. I then had a cosmo which was better but not fantastic.
For a place with such high prices I would expect table service. I ended up spending more time in line at the bar (even just for a bottle of water) than I did sitting at the table. If you’re going to make people wait while you make them, at least put more than one person in the bar please. There was always at least a 10 minute wait and the restaurant was only half full.
The best thing about the night was the courtesy bus to get us to and from the hotel.

Myself and partner went here for our anniversary dinner having been recommended it my others.
Unfortunately it did not live up to expectations.
We ordered two steaks, one with bugs and both with sauce.
The sauce was cold, the steaks hasn't been rested, the bugs were inedible and the presentation very messy.
The restaurant is beautiful and open with a lovely breeze which is one reason the food should be coming out of the kitchen piping hot.
Service was very lacking - apart from the hostess and the barman. Our table waitress took the order and cleared the plates. There was no check back and trying to catch someone's eye to tell them about the food proved impossible, even though at the time the restaurant was not particularly busy with many staff on.
We were thoroughly unimpressed.
I wasn't going to write a negative review because we didn't complain at the time (we just wanted to leave as were both very upset with the meal and total lack of service). However, I personally wrote to the restaurant following our visit to give our feedback which has been left unanswered after two weeks.
Lovely spot but we won't be back for a meal anytime soon unfortunately.

Good morning,
To start yes we did receive your email (8 days ago), and I apologise for not responding......we found the email rather contradicting so we chose not to respond.
We do at Northerlies take on board both positive and negative feedback. In this case, as you have both stated in your email and this review, chose not to inform any of the staff at the time of dining your issues with your meal. We always empower all the staff to ensure that guests leave with a smile on their face. Had you chosen to let us know on the night, I am sure that our professional staff would of immediately rectified any issues you had.
Over the Christmas period Northerlies have served over 12,000 meals, on the night you dined we had 34 reservations and actually did 174 covers, so in this case our service staff may have been a little pushed. It is one of those I guess crystal ball moments that we had not correctly forecast. We apologies that maybe on this occasion we may have missed the mark, but again; if you had chosen to inform our staff at the time of dining, I am positive that the outcome would have exceeded expectations.

Disappointed with the experience for our Valentine’s Day dinner - for the price you pay you’d expect table service and high quality food. Couldn’t order the entree and mains at the same time - had to go up to order each course separately.
Told the sashimi and oysters were sold out - obviously not well prepared for Valentine’s Day. The salmon ravioli dish special came undercooked.
It’s a pretty venue with a beautiful view it’s just a shame the restaurant felt like a overpriced pub.
Venue staff friendly.

Had this booked for a birthday dinner on one of our 5 days in Airlie Beach, conveniently located next to our accomodation at Freedom Shores. The accomodation was 5 stars - the restaurant was about 2.5.
So many people since we arrived had raved about Northerlies but we experienced an overpriced pub feed. The food was ok, but after so many excellent meals at a range of locations in Airlie beach, from hotels to cafes to sailing day trips - this felt like a step down from the unfaultable produce Airlie had to offer.
Food was taken to the wrong table and the steak sandwich was so chewy you couldn’t get a complete mouthful. The mushroom sauce for the (possibly cooked from frozen) schnitzel was reminiscent of a Coles brand powdered sauce.
Didn’t even even stick around to see if they had anything worse constituting a birthday dessert.
Why anyone bothers to travel this far out of Airlie is slightly beyond me. You’d get much better value at KC’s in town or a beautiful view at Tide’s for about the same price. Great cocktails though!

Ate lunch here - all you can eat pizza for $25pp. (drinks extra)
The pizza's are full size so we only got try 2 of the ones on offer, they were fantastic.
The mojito was out of this world, I only needed 1...
Views and atmosphere both relaxing and inviting.

I understand cooking is hard and a stressful job as I was a chef in Melbourne but this was discussing my partner is pregnant and they couldn't even cook a well done egg therefore my partner went with a cezar with no egg.
The most over priced place in airlie beach. I orderd a steak thinking for 45 dollars it was the bee knees,far from Woolworths steak extremely disappointed with the service for such a great view.i am a local and wouldn't recommend at all . no one even approached us and asked if our Meal was alright.
If you don't look after the locals word gets around its all well and good to smack together for the tourist at a high price but I feel the passion has slipped with Northies
There is a lot of room for improvement and feel simple is best if you can't nail the simple things people will simply not come back

Sensational lunch or dinner location! Courtesy bus from Airlie was friendly and punctual. Service upon arrival was great! With no reservation we were seated at the beach end of the restaurant with a lovely sea breeze and beautiful view. Table service was awesome. Food was great. Very nice way to spend an afternoon 👌🏻

Amazing location however the kitchen is not accommodating. I don’t eat meat but do eat some fish. I really wanted the mackerel but not with chips so requested the szechuan greens off the menu with the addition of mackerel.. they wouldn’t do it. I ended up with mackerel and mash and had to purchase a portion of green beans for an additional $9. I would have happily paid extra to get my mackerel with the szechuan greens but no too difficult.. my meal was average, the mash was cold. Friends had the seafood bowl, in two of the meals the ‘crusty’ bread was forgotten. They asked for their bread and got two of the smallest pieces of hard bread…
Saying that however the seafood bowl itself was delicious.
Overall a great place but please make a little bit of effort when asked. It’s not that difficult.
Luckily I was with a great group of friends and they made the experience a great one.

For a start the views are incredibly hard to beat from any location at Northerlies and it is so easy to just laze around all day sipping a drink and soaking up the atmosphere. The restaurant and bar food menus are delicious, there are plenty of games about the place to keep kids occupied and the drinks are always cold and enjoyable. It really feels like you're on holiday at a resort!

We visited the restaurant on good recommendation and we weren’t disappointed.
The steaks were beautiful and cooked to perfection how we liked.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
We also caught the local bus to get to this restaurant and the driver was safe, made sure we were all comfortable for the journey.
The restaurant is set out with waves crashing on the shore, beautiful views.
Strongly recommend visiting here.

Out of all the restaurants in Airlie beach we decided that we would go to Northerlies for lunch for my husband's birthday. We had a great lunch with our family and really enjoyed ourselves. Unfortunately there wasn't enough room in our daughter in laws car. She made 2 journey on the way. But we decided to use the courtesy bus on the way home. My son & I spoke to a waitress who gave us details of the stop off points. We waited for the bus and the driver turned up he did not make eye contact with any one or spoke to anyone. We were near the back & he went sailing past first stop then the second stop. We eventually came to a stop in Airlie Beach. We were quite flabbergasted maybe we should have shouted out but we were led to believe he made the stops. As we got out he sarcastically said" You're welcome" so we had to get a bus most of the way back. So what started as a lovely meal was spoilt by this surly man. Shame really as everything else was lovely
