Sugar and Spice Restaurant and Inn is located in our guesthouse in Kata Beach, Phuket. We have been open since 2013. Our big restaurant serves traditional Thai food and a bunch of other Western style dishes, including pasta, ribs, burgers and some Scandinavian and Russian food. Mostly we specialize in Thai food as it’s so delicious and flexible and everyone likes it. Thai cuisine places emphasis on lightly prepared dishes with strong aromatic components. Thai cuisine is famous for being spicy, but balance, detail and variety are important to Thai cooking. The five fundamental taste senses in each dish or the overall meal are hot (spicy), sour, sweet, salty and sometimes bitter. Please bring your friends and eat Thai food as a shared meal and much more fun when you eat together. Have each friend or family member order something different. We’ll put it in the center of the table, and you can share a great meal. We’re looking forward to having you eat with us!

Sugar and Spice is really quite nice

The first thing you notice about Sugar and Spice is the bright and colourful lights that beckon you in. At the door, a lady, possibly the owner, with excellent English, greets you and shows you to your table. The menu is extensive and offers Thai, Western and Russian options. They also offer Australian wine, which is a reasonable price by Thai standards, but expensive for what we pay for that brand in Australia. The wine was served with bravado, ice-buckets and extravagant balloon wine glasses all included. The dishes came quickly, one after the other. The Thai omelette was especially delicious, however, the chicken massaman lacked a depth of flavour. For Aussie readers, 3 people with starters, mains and 2 bottles of wine was around $110

Popular for a reason

The food here is fantastic and a surprisingly reasonable price for what you get. However because of this, you may need to wait for a table if you drop by, especially if you're the late dinner type. It seems like it's constantly full for dinner. They can customize the spiciness on many things for picky eaters like my kids who devoured curry, crab and fish.

Hi TrueKid, thanks for your nice review. Yes, this time of year we are quite busy. It's just Dec, Jan and Feb when we are super busy, as it's peak season in Phuket. The rest of the year it's not so hard to get a table. Yes, we can customize spiciness for sure! If you want it the Thai spicy, just let us know. Delicious White Snapper with White potatoes and creamy sauce

Stopped at the Street by waiter, who recommended thaifood and pasta. Having explained that I did not eat either Rice nor pasta, he suggested the White Snapper with White potatoes and creamy sauce, which turned out to be very delicious , barbecued and cleaned for bones. Nice dinner and clever thinking waiter.

An uncomfortable dining experience

We visited Sugar and Spice restaurant after reading such positive reviews- unfortunately I should have read the negative reviews also. It’s located on a busy noisy corner of a main road. The restaurant was super hot and sweaty, only halfway through our meal did somebody think to offer us a fan. Restaurant was cramped, chairs were so heavy it was hard to move them. Horrible music banging, no atmosphere in restaurant. Food was average and portions were very small and expensive compared to other nearby restaurants. Staff were moody apart from the friendly lady who welcomed us, it seemed that if you were Russian you got served with a smile, everybody else might as well been invisible. We had such an uncomfortable experience that we did not even finish our food before we made a quick exit. There are lots of good Thai restaurants near to kata and Karon beach, this definitely isn’t one of them.

Delicious Food

Such a lovely family owned restaurant, really clean and really tasty food! We had the chicken satay (which was amazing), the papaya salad and spring rolls as a starter which were all really delicious! For mains we had Thai green curry which was the best curry we’ve had in Thailand so far and some yummy pad Thai! Quick service and if you want to book any tours Ian who works at the restaurant is really helpful and offers a good price. We will definitely return!

Dinner for two

We were looking for somewhere to have dinner, stopped to glance at the menu outside, the choices and prices looked good, so we gave this place a try. The staff were polite and helpful, quickly showing us to a table, we ordered snapper with garlic and pepper and a grilled snapper to share along with a couple of glasses of red wine, we weren’t in a hurry but were happy to wait for the food to be cooked from fresh. The food was good, cooked to perfection, so we stayed for pancakes and ice cream for dessert.

Fantastic food, great cooking class, very friendly

These guys are brilliant. We have been attending their free cooking class every Saturday for a few months now. They always go out of their way to accommodate us as vegetarians, and their regular menu is fantastic too. Very tasty food, extremely helpful and friendly staff. The owners even recommended a few other places for us to try which have also been a hit. Would absolutely recommend Sugar & Spice for any meal, and the cooking classes on Saturdays. Very reasonably priced food, lovely surroundings and plenty of fans to keep you cool.

Very Disappointed

Went here after reading the Reviews which were good, we had to wait 5 minutes for a table to come free, the front of House Lady took us to our table, this is a busy noisy restaurant Music loud,waiting about 10 minutes for someone to come for Drinks order, ordered food at same time, which came within 5 minutes, but no cutlery on the table which we had to ask for, food was good I have had better and worse, after we asked for the bill the Front of house lady came over to us asking did we like Kata had we any trips planned etc which then led her into her saying she can organise Tips, she has a counter right in the middle of the restaurant with Trip leaflets on she was showing us what she could offer. She gave us her Business Card, she was Called Ian !! We left with her leaflets which went in the nearest Bin, I certainly don’t go to a Restaurant to be try and sold Trips anyway definitely one place to miss

Thanks for your review and sorry you don't like our style. Yes, we're very busy, if you had come off peak time we probably would have gotten to you faster. With Aeing, the tour manager, she speaks English very well. All you had to do was say no thank you and she would have gone away. We're sorry we bothered you but most people in a tourist area are used to these kinds of questions. We are a guesthouse and restaurant. Yes, we're busy, we won't appogize for our success. ❤️🇹🇭

Lives up to name!

I’ve been here less than 24 hours and have already eaten here twice. First dish was a lovely dish from Northern Thailand which appears on the chalkboard and is well worthy of your Thai baht. The chicken was fall off the bone and sauce was succulent! Last night I got the morning glory with red curry which I’m on my way to learn how to cook in their free cooking class at 11:30 AM Saturday mornings. Their house wine is among the best I’ve had here in Thailand and it is priced right. I cannot imagine how good the premium is… I highly recommend this place because the owners are on hand and at the top of their game.

Still our favourite restaurant in Phuket

As part of our second holiday in Phuket, it was wonderful to be welcomed again by everyone at Sugar & Spice when we visited with our children and their partners. It was great to see many familiar faces still working there and I was thrilled that their Southern Curry was still on the menu. As a group of 6, they always tried to seat us quickly and the service and food never disappointed.

Oh, wow, Scott, thanks so much for this. We're so happy to see return customers. We've been very lucky with our staff and managed to keep most of them even with the Covid disruption. We're happy to hear you like our Southern Curry! It's a simple dish served everywhere in southern Thailand but it's delicious, spicy and nice, and served with a fried egg, excellent. Good drinks but poor quality Pad Thai

We started the meal by ordering spring rolls, fresh pineapple juice and mai tai drink. We thought these were quite good and ordered Pad Thai; one with chicken and one with pork. Unfortunately both tasted of seafood. Perhaps they have used the same frying pan and tools as when they prepare Pad Thai with seafood 🤷‍♀️ But it did not taste good. The general quality of the Pad Thai was not too impressive either.

Tasty, would return.

We couldn’t get into our restaurant of choice when visiting the Yard Lai Sunday market in Phuket town so made our way back to kata. We chose here because it had a lot of good reviews so decided to give it a try. We were seated quickly by very friendly staff and the menu was quite extensive with some options for those not wanting traditional Thai food. Regardless we all had Thai choices, chicken satay, prawn fish cakes, penang curry, spicy yellow curry & pad Thai. Along with a couple of rounds of drinks our bill came to 1750 baht. Tasty food and good service, we’d go back again.

We had our first meal here in Phuket while waiting for our hotel to prepare our rooms. We were exhausted from our 17 hours of travel but soon perked up when we saw the numerous traditional Thai dishes available which we had remembered from our very first trip here in 2004. Keen to show our girls the tastes of Thailand, we ordered about 5 different dishes which were just enough to tantalise our tastebuds for the week to come! The setting is a colorful combination of casual family-friendly cosiness, with a beach-breezy atmosphere. Meals are available from breakfast (a hearty selection of both Western and Thai breakfasts) through to dinner. Both times we came here to eat, we were pleased with our tasty and hearty portions of excellent food!

Best choice for Kata

The best choice for Kata. Very flavorful and delicious food. We tried curries, papaya salad and seafood. Everything was very tasty. Mango sticky rice is fantastic and so are smoothies and fresh juices. The owner is a very nice lady. Extremely friendly and a nice to chat to. Recommended!

Amazing

We ate at Sugar and Spice the first time we had Sweet and Sour Chicken with Pawpaw Salad, with couple of Pina Coladas to wash it down simply amazing it was so good we returned two evenings later for dinner again. We order Pineapple Salad and Sweet and Sour Fish, with the fish cooked to perfection and the Pineapple Salad fresh and tasty and again Pina Coladas. All up two excellent meals.
