Upon arrival to Mathes we were informed by the owner that they had got their Lamb in today, that was dinner sorted before even seeing the menu! 3 of us had Lamb despite me not even liking Lamb in the UK. The food was exquisite, the lamb was lovely and tender with a taste you can only get from the... More

Taverna Mathes is well of the tourist map. Unless you like to walk up hills then a taxi is called. We went with friends who had previously visited the taverna. The best observation I can give is you get what you see. Amazing views, a relaxed eating experience without the clatter of too much company. I felt it was a... More

When in Georgiopolis, you should definitely include three tavernas , namely Arkadia, Mathes and Thymaria: the food is as good as you will get anywhere but the views are stunning and not to be missed . Excellent little gift shop with great value items at Lotus shop, in Vafes near Vrissos ; Cheap taxi rides needed for all these places... More

This local family owned taverns, in the clearly signed village of Mathes, just off the Georgiopolis - Kournos Lake road, gives an "Eagles Nest" view down to the coast. For years we have been able to combine a lake visit while, especially at weekends, have a good meal while avoiding the hordes of visiting coach loads descending on Kournos. Toilets... More

This Taverna is well worth the effort to find. Here you can escape the "busier" Kournas and Georgioupolis. Lovely setting with a spectacular terrace looking down onto Georgioupolis. Our food was very tasty with a real homemade feel and we tried several smaller dishes. The staff were very friendly. We felt it was also very good value. Well worth the... More

This is a pretty place, on the central square, so is right in the heart of 'George'. Service was friendly but nothing outstanding -it was really busy, so tables took a while to be cleared. I has a medium-rare serloin steak (Steak Methos- with a garlic sauce) which was chewy (not quite tough) and overwhelmingly garlic. We probably wouldn't eat... More

Well worth the journey up the winding road from Lake Kournas. Great lamb, tuna and moussaka and wonderful views over the Georgiopolis bay. Friendly service although slightly more expensive than similar meals available elsewhere locally. Will definitely go back!

I walked up to Mathes on the wednesday afternoon on the first week of our stay. I really enjoyed the walk and was wet with sweat on reaching the Mathes Taverna, I ordered a large beer and drank in the beautiful scenes as well as the beer, after which I returned to Georgioupolis and told my wife about my adventure.... Mathes Taverna is a very welcoming and friendly taverna on the mountain above Georgioupolis. An outside terrace means fantastic bays over the Bay and welcome cool after the heat of the day. All the food is home-made. The grills are amazing, washed down with house wine or a cold beer. Yammas! Easy to find if you have a car, but... More
