Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We ate here when we stayed overnight in Taihape. The lady at front of house was very friendly. There is a menu and an extensive cabinet as well and an alcohol licence. Several of the items on the printed menu were not available but they had alternatives. FoH also helped with suggestions and altered the menu to meet our needs.

A superb small town establishment, with easy parking, and outdoor dining as well. It is a cafe, so counter service initially, which can be a tad slow when they are busy, but that is a good sign. Coffee is always consistently good, but the Corn Fritter stack was the best I have ever had, the touch of spices in this brought out extra flavours

It was nice to sit on the front terrace in the sunshine today. We had a pleasant pie and salad which was reasonably priced. I did find the pastry slightly strange but the filling was delicious and the salad on the side was pleasant. Service was quick which is good when you are travelling.

Would not recommend. We ordered a Cajun chicken salad and it was 3 pieces of chicken with chilli sauce in a pita bread it was $18 and a waste of money. When questioned the chef said it was Cajun sauce but it was exactly the same sauce as the chilli sauce on the wedges. There was about 4 lettuce leaves and no tomatoes, or carrot or any salad. The wedges came out as a plate of potato no cheese or toppings of any kind. There was also a 40 minute wait and there was around 5 tables full. Over all bad experience and would not go back nor recommend.

We stopped here as have a daughter with coeliac disease, and they had a wonderful selection of gf options. Found the prices were right up there, and the meals were average at best. The kids meals were inedible due to the amount of salt on them. I did let them know and they kindly offered to make some more or give us a refund on the kids meals, which I declined on both as we had to get back on the road.

We'd been here previously and it was a good experience, so decided to return over the weekend as we were traveling through. Nice range of food. Lovely sunny location. However none of the staff were wearing masks despite being being at orange level, dealing with food and the public. This is a requirement to protect us all. It's not good enough to take it upon yourself to blatantly ignore this requirement. Poor compliance.

We came here specifically owing to the reviews here, and it did not disappoint. A great cabinet of GF food was available for those who require this. We settled for the beer battered fish n chips and the beef burger. Both good choices. Nice setting. Clean. Well done.

We often pass through Taihape on our travels. Have probably tried most place there. Today the Brown Sugar did not have something to suit our tastes so looked around. This place is about 80 metres off State Highway 1 and thus easy to miss especially traveling north. Ordered iced coffee, smothie, lambs fry & bacon, French toast (an usual order for us). Every thing had a taste twist which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Great little cafe with lovely choices to make from the menu. I went for creamy mushrooms with hash browns, ciabatta and a fried egg. Gorgeous! When asked about vegan options they whipped up hash browns with mushrooms spinach and tomato - no problem and delicious! The collection of antique telephones adds to the quirky and relaxing vibe of the cafe.

We have used this cafe for years. Again just prior to Xmas my wife and I noticed a slippage of product and service. On New Years Eve on our way home we tried it again. 1. Told what was in the food display was not correctly labelled. 60 Seconds with a cloth and pen would have correct the sign on the glass front. 2. When I ordered Smoothy I was informed that they do not do such drinks. I replied that I had one 8 days before. They tried to "interest" me in something they called Bubble Tea. Further questions were replied to stating that their mixer had broken. 5 Minutes shopping would have fixed the problem. 3. My wife asked what was the "Soup of the Day" and was answered that they did not do soup. Again we were lied too . 5. Gave up and went elsewhere !

Stopped in Taihape for morning tea and were immediately attracted to this cafe by its sunny front veranda. It was just as 'sunny' inside as well, with a pleasant, relaxed ambiance and another attractive outdoor dining area, this time in a delightful garden setting. Coffee was excellent, and they offered an excellent line-up of slices, cakes, brownies etc. Treated myself to a very yummy ginger & pistachio slice.

On a rod trip from Auckland planned to overnight in Taihape and eat at Cafe Telephonique as it was #1 on TA. Web site says open 7 days 8 til late. This is Sunday 6pm. Totally shut. Understandable in these covid ravaged times. Unforgivable that your web site is so badly wrong.

Coffee was very good but we were disappointed with the treats we tried. The lemon square was confusing. No obvious lemon and just a sort of nondescript sweet caramel filling and the oaty caramel square was similarly unconvincing. Service was very good and ambience pleasant enough.

Venue excellent and friendly staff. Unfortunately the cheese scone was very very average and the flat white was so bitter I couldn’t finish it. Better get someone in there who knows about food and stop cutting corners

We stopped for dinner on our way through Taihape, and it was absolutely and unexpectedly fab. Between the four of us we had two of the burgers, the seafood chowder and the chicken breast on kumara mash. They were all delicious and the service was great. There’s also a lovely selection of cabinet food, including a whole cabinet of gluten free yumminess. And some gorgeous gourmet products to buy and take away. We will definitely be back when we’re travelling through. Thank you!
