Having lived in Japan before this is the Japan I get nostalgic about. Out of the way dives with great food. We went with locals who live in Hakuba and this is the first place they recommended when we wanted to go to an izakaya. Tatami mat seating for groups and unfortunately smoking is permitted. Had the yakitori, tsukune, grilled... More

We enjoyed our visit here a lot; the only downside was the cigarette smoke. Unfortunately this is still a part of Japanese Izakaya culture. The place was recommended by local Hakuba people. The food was typical delicious Izakaya fare with plenty of vegetarian options. The Nama lemon sour was made with fresh lemon juice as was the Nama grapefruit sour,... More

If you can't handle cigarette smoke, then move on. It gets rave reviews but it's just "ok" for local food. Totally random menu with some good dishes, but dev more tapas style. Echo land area has some better local food spots. Staff were gracious, food was served fast.

We stayed in Hotel Hakuba, Kichonchon was just 3 minutes away, hiding in a quite street, without any advertisement. A joyful restaurant with waitresses/waiters wearing different hats. We visited this restaurant 3 days in a row. There were lots of varieties of food. From the popular one edamame, agedashi tofu, chicken teriyaki, grilled skewers to more fusion cuisine. Special recommendation... More

This place doesn't look as good as the food it serves is. It has Japanese tables, but as the house was full, we were seated by the bar desk on chairs. Staff was busy so everything didn't happen that fast, but the food was perfect. We ate e.g. sashimi and yakitori. All were served straight over the counter by the... More

I have been there in Jan 2013 as the owner of where we stayed recommended it. Some of the Hakuba restaurants are over price due to the skiing tourism. However Kichonchon is a typical Izakaya and they don't even advertise on any tourists magazine yet full of people. My family had a typical Japanese Izakaya dishes some you can only... More

Huge menu... cheap as chips... good, down home izakaya atmosphere. For a laugh, try the Russian Roulette Takoyaki... somebody's gettin burned!
