The specialty here is fried shrimp, which can be described as "crispy and plump"!
Looking at the menu, there are many dishes such as shrimp bowl, pork cutlet bowl, pork cutlet set meal, fried shrimp set meal, and pork fillet cutlet set meal.
But since this is a restaurant that sells shrimp, we decided on the "fried shrimp set meal".
Since it is a famous restaurant, we were prepared to wait, so we visited around 14:00 to see the surrounding tourist spots.
The restaurant was almost full, but we were lucky to be able to get a seat right away.
The menu is extensive, but were they sold out? Was it because of the time we visited?
It seems that the shrimp itself, which is their specialty, never runs out, but on the day, the bowls were sold out, but the set meals were available.
A different type of shrimp? The sauce has run out? Crispy and plump
We were aiming for the set meal, so it didn't affect us.
It came out after about 5 minutes of waiting, so it was quick.
The shrimp was big, and when you bite into it, the batter was crispy and the meat was plump!
There was almost no shell on the tail, so it felt like a whole shrimp.
What can I say? I wish there was more rice.

Name is Junpei. Friendly staff. Simple but fun and excellent Katsu curry which is why I liked it so much. Off the beaten track as it’s not in the centre but a few blocks away and worth the effort

Chicken katsu was cooked perfectly and it was definitely worth a visit. The place was very busy but we didn't have to wait too long. The food was prepared quickly and delicious. Don't forget to put down your name on the waiting list on your arrival!

It was quite packed when we arrived for lunch but the turnover was fast and the service is good and prompt. I was quite surprised by the short waiting time. We ordered Pork cutlet curry and cheese chicken curry. It doesnt disappoint. Both of them had a crispy exterior with a warm and soft interior that would delight even the purists. However, the Cheese chicken portion is small. The curry is fantastic too, bridled with the aromatic spice of good Japanese curry and the portion is generous. The meals come with salad and soup. Loved it!

Hi everyone,
I would like to share with you my awsome experience in JUMPEI and my dish recommendation,
1) the staff is warmly welcoming,
2) the food is made with local product only and the oil used for the cooking is selected to be the most healthy and tasty!
3) English menu is available also an extra menu with photo is also available and that help LOTS !
4) I definitly recommend the FILET and SHRIMP KATSU!
5) What are you waiting for ? hahaha Just go go go!
Mostly known by local the place is now very popular with foreigner as well, please expect some queue...

Their ebi tempura don is really the best I have ever eaten. Made with fresh tiger prawns and drizzled with a delicious sauce, it was so good that we made a return trip the following day just to eat it again before we leave Biei.

We had a bit of trouble finding this place but good thing we managed to, cos this place served really good stuff! The prawn tempura was okay IMO, what I really really liked was the omelette rice. You know, the one with the egg covering the whole rice with curry. 😍 THAT was my favourite, cos I tried a couple of other things as well. This place closes by 8pm so better get there early. We got there around 6? 630 and it was close to last orders already.

We visited Biei in early May. There was no flowers to see in Biei. The whole town was quiet.
Luckily, we came here and we were not disappointed. As it was low season, the line was not particularly long, but we still had to wait 20 minutes before getting seated.
We had pork cutlet as well as Ebi fry, Serving size was generous. There was just the right amount of batter. It was very crunchy and right after the crunchiness was the actually meat (or shrimp). It's simply the best we have had in Japan.
If you come to Hokkaido, this restaurant is a must visit.
TIP: If you somehow missed visiting this restaurant, the little convenient store at JR Asahikawa station (there was only one store within the station) sells their "Jun Dog". (ie. Ebi Fry). It's not as good as when it's hot and fresh, but still better than totally missing out.

As another poster pointed out, correct name is Junpei not Jumpei. We went there under recommendations from family who just visited few weeks ago, and was pleasantly surprised! We both had tempura shrimp, one with the shrimp separate (think that was called a set) and the other a shrimp bowl with sauce drizzled on top. We didn't try the pork or curry, the tempura shrimp was good enough! Shrimp was large and very juicy, one of the best tempura shrimp I've ever had!
There is free parking right beside the restaurant, no need to reserve although we did arrive early (around 1130am for lunch). Many locals frequent this place so might be packed if you arrive at peak lunch hour

Good choice of Japanese curries an don (something on top of rice with a special sauce). Small salad or miso an pickles included depending on dish. Not the cheapest but inexpensive.

Best tempura prawn i have eaten, seem like the address has changed of the phone has changed but google map got us there. See the photo. Best with beer.

Correct name is JUNPEI, not Jumpei.
Best fried shrimps we've ever tried.....so yummy ! We had a pork cutlet bowl and a fried shrimp bowl with 4 large shrimps in it. A set consists of a miso soup, a salad and rice underneath e shrimps/pork. We ended up with another alacarte shrimp order ~ yes, another 4 shrimps !
Must try !

we had the ebi prawn bowl (which was excellent), the roast chicken in soy sauce also was superb. the omelet chicken rice was ok. my friend said the chicken katsu was very nice as well. English menu helped a lot too!
all in all a good meal especially in the biei area!
