First time here - loved the decor. The wait staff were prompt, friendly and helpful although we did have an early booking prior to seeing a show. The waiter recommended the duck and I can say without a doubt it was superb and one of the best dishes of duck I have eaten. The meat was tender and crisp on top, served with cherries and sauce and a cigar shaped offering which I can’t remember what it was but it was delicious! My companions both had the burger which looked very tasty. Came with thick cut chips served in a copper pan. We enjoyed a bottle of Mt Langi Ghiran Shiraz - terrific! Would recommend and go back.

The Fitzroy Town Hall Hotel is a typical inner city pub. The food is much as you would expect , but my steak with salad was quite palatable. We do not live far from Fitzroy, but the parking is shocking; last time we went, I got a parking ticket. The service is a bit slap-dash, but the beer is cold and in plentiful supply. My family were satisfied with the meal.

We had yummy cocktails and an even better dinner here. We enjoyed the delicious anchovy on crumpet and shared the pork cutlet as well as the orecchiette both were cooked perfectly as well as very tasty. The creme brûlée was also flavourful. The service was friendly and the bar staff were helpful with cocktail suggestions.

We were there for a family birthday celebration, four adults and two small children, probably something close to every restaurant's nightmare combination. The service was excellent and accommodating. The food was not as good as I have remembered however the Chicken Liver Parfait w. Port Reduction & Toasted Brioche was extremely generous. and the main disappointment was the $220 1.4kg Cote de Beouf. A good sized meal for two big meat-eaters. But tonight it was very fatty and very gristley. It was also a little more on the rare side of medium rare. being served sliced, it got cold fairly quickly and very fatty meat is not appetising what starts getting cold. At just over $800 for the night, it was particularly memorable.

The food was amazing, they were quick to take our food order, but what let the whole experince of dining there is the lack of service, it was like yep you have your meal. It was only 2 of us, I felt that we were forgotten as they were more interested in servicing the tables of bigger parties. A few times we tried to get their attention so we could order more drinks after the 3rd time with no luck in getting service we left. Just remember people of a party of 2 or less do tip big too. I will not be coming back or recommending your hotel. poor service.

We had lunch there today - food was great, however, very poor service. The actual venue is lovely but on a cold day, the heaters uy on the open fireplace. Music too loud but the fish dishes - John Dory @ Hapuka were excellent- pity.

Couldn’t agree less with the recent review by “train wreck” who might be aptly named. Three of us had a most enjoyable dinner mid-week recently in this bustling , busy , and friendly pub . Good , comprehensive menu complemented by a good wine list with plenty of options by the glass . Loved the oyster shots with mirin and sake , and a perfectly cooked sirloin . The staff were friendly , competent , and well informed . Will be back !

We had our daughter’s engagement party in the garden room, the staff were friendly and easy to work with while organising the event. Food options were perfect along with wine and beer selection. Great place for an event. Thank you for such a great experience

One of my favourite bars & restaurants in the area; where all the action is but not too loud and crowded. I’ve dined here before and can say the food is top notch. Everything you love about a gastropub; excellent food but in a casual relaxed setting. The old fashioned cocktail I ordered was done just the way I like it.

The cellar here is a brilliant private room. I booked it for a group for a Saturday night. When we arrived, there was another group in there. We were in the middle of the main dining room. I explained that the sole reason we were there (and I dragged people across town) was because of the private room (some people hard of hearing). It was impossible to remedy, of course. So the only saving grace was that Ella did absolutely everything to make it up to us, including not sitting any more walk-ins in that part of the dining room. Although a mix up like that should not have occurred, in the end a great night was had by all. All due to Ella’s response. Will definitely go back.

Overall a very good experience ... everyone that attended enjoyed the food and service ... Disappointing that there was no indication of the 15% surcharge for Sunday .. we were asked to pay 1 bill for each table and I told our group the Sunday Roast was $25 and to bring correct cash .. there also seemed to be some confusion on the application of the surcharge for drinks at the bar ....

Stumbled across this gem while we had 45mins to spare before going to The Night Cat across the road for some live music... So pleasantly surprised by a terrific pub meal that was a lot better than an average pub.... hubby said the burger is best he's had in a long time, the meat patty was melt in your mouth, I had the fish, amazing, even the salad was great, fresh, great dressing. Got a house red as we had to chug it down, but for a house it was pretty special, don't know what it was and wish i'd asked, looked like a really good wine menu.... will definitely go back when we are in the area, which we are a lot for gigs.... bravo.... great pub, ambience relaxing, felt like a proper civilised English pub 👌

Went to the Cox Plate. As a tradition for 25 years we find a nice hotel after the races for dinner with our group. We booked a table for 6 at 8pm. We arrived at 7.50pm. We had difficulty from a bar tender who insisted we wait at the booking table and not the bar to be booked in (even though there were hardly any patrons in the place. Table wasn't ready and were required to sit in the bar. We had 4 drinks waiting for our table. At 8.50 the staff informed us they were refusing service to 2 of us (drinking)..... mmm so we were served for an hour (when we should have been eating our dinner by then)........ things began to deteriorate. We finally got to our table at 9pm. One of the 4 patrons that they are serving orders a vodka /soda gets a vodka/lemonade. Back to the bar to get it exchanged (it was her first drink for the day). So then the water informs that table that nobody will be served alcohol. We decide to vacate at 9.15pm after a significant altercation. We actually requested the police be called to adjudicate as we suggested whilst we had been at the races we were a 4/10 regarding inebriation. Got told it wasn't our level of sobriety but our attitude toward the initial bar staff member that had given us attitude on the way in (possible the staff member had predisposition to horse racing and patrons?). OK so 6 people in Melbourne looking for an alternate location for dinner at 9.15pm on a Saturday night. Walked into the next bar for two drinks without any issues with staff and went home. This was a very ugly incident and the worst experience we've had after 25 years after the races...... ironically of the 25 years we've been doing this, at age 47 now we were probably the least intoxicated we'd been over those years..... no doubt we'd had a few.... I'd have thought maybe 0.06 to 0.08 so had a few and weren't causing trouble, perhaps a bit load an a bit jovial (who isn't hey? after a day at the track). So just don't risk having your night interrupted by the judgement here, they could have fed us and moved us on without incident, but too it upon themselves to create the tension.... if we were on the wrong side of having had too much, they shouldn't have served us, and if they claim that we got more intoxicated waiting for our table then they shouldn't have booked us in at 8pm if they couldn't accommodate us until 9pm....... or forewarned us of their view on the way in and give us time to redirect to an alternate venue...... ugly incident no good for the venue or us as patrons. Don't risk your night with these guys!

Fitzroy Town Hall Hotel is a typical inner city pub, It has a popular public bar, with facilities for private functions. It also has facilites for weddings, 21sts and any other sort of function. The food is typical pub food -- fish and chips, bangers and mash and so on. The food is abundant and the beer is cold -- what more could you ask for?

Fitzroy
Fitzroy is an unusual blend of working class roots, hip gentrification, and a robust bohemian work ethic. Along Brunswick Street and its side streets, you'll find little independent shops where local clothes and furniture designers display their wares. There are specialist bookshops, funky record bars, and quality vintage clothing shops where browsing is the next best thing to buying. Gertrude Street is famous for its cuisine and art galleries, but if you want to buy an old-fashioned snooker table, there is a shop for that too. Small pubs still exist, tucked away on the corners of suburban side streets that serve up traditional Sunday roasts. Live music abounds, and the street performers play so hard you worry to tip them would ruin their concentration. Venture to the Spanish quarter on Johnston Street and you may even find street dancing. It is all happening amidst off-beat street murals and the shuffle of a very funky neighbourhood that embraces both old and new.
