We stepped in expecting nothing but a decent meal, we ended up with a surprisingly nice supper and a bunch of good memories. The staff is friendly and diligent, no more than 10min wait per dish. Amazing wine list. We had steak, fried potatoes, and creme brule: I really can't single out the best among these. Believe me, it was... More

This restaurant shut in January. The site is being redeveloped and all restaurant fittings have been stripped from the building. An excellent option is a French Bistro in Brunswick Street traveling South near the corner of Moor St called Bon Ap or a little restaurant on the corner of Moor and Nicholson Streets called Mon Ami.

One of my favourite restaurants. Always exceptional food and service. Great wine selection. Nice for an intimate diner or catch up with friends.

Well Madam Sousou has obviously changed hands. This was our eldest daughter's favorite restaurant. Beautiful decor, comfortable, not too loud or crowded. Excellent food. What a letdown on this occasion. The food was salty, over oily/buttery but not in a good way. Floppy over cooked veggies and staff were not knowledgeable about the menu nor really that attentive to their... More

Madame Sousou is shut for massive rebuilding. Prior to shutting earlier this year the food quality had dropped and the prices had gone up. Service varied from delightful to forgetful. A great new French Bistro has opened further South on Brunswick St -Bon Ap.

Madame Sousou has maintained a high standard over many years with its food and excellent service. Its perfect for a meal, wine or just a coffee and watch the action on Brunswick Street. Great atmosphere and the place to go for a feeling of Paris in Fitzroy.

On brunswick street, this cafe has a lovely quiet shady terrace, with the seats arranged so you can sit next to your companion and watch the street. The service was amazing, we arrived just as the kitchen was closing and the waitress did her utmost to convince the chefs to prepare our order anyway. She succeeded and the oysters appeared.... Great atmosphere, and nice touch of France in the Brunswick Street. Stuff is great and I really like the feeling being there for a coffee and croissant.

Staying in Fitzroy

Neighbourhood Profile
Fitzroy is an unusual blend of working class roots, hip gentrification, and a robust bohemian work ethic. Along Brunswick Street and its side streets, you'll find little independent shops where local clothes and furniture designers display their wares. There are specialist bookshops, funky record bars, and quality vintage clothing shops where browsing is the next best thing to buying. Gertrude Street is famous for its cuisine and art galleries, but if you want to buy an old-fashioned snooker table, there is a shop for that too. Small pubs still exist, tucked away on the corners of suburban side streets that serve up traditional Sunday roasts. Live music abounds, and the street performers play so hard you worry to tip them would ruin their concentration. Venture to the Spanish quarter on Johnston Street and you may even find street dancing. It is all happening amidst off-beat street murals and the shuffle of a very funky neighbourhood that embraces both old and new.
