Great customer service. Very friendly and helpful staff. Specialize in eel (unagi) dishes. Superb, tender and moist. Nicest eel I've eaten. Lovely Hokusai style prints on the wall and female staff wear kimono.

The meal was excellent. Guess having 200 years to perfect the craft tells. The eel is a little less sweet than I normally encountered, but that brings out the charred taste of the grill. May be a little more expensive, but the ambiance and service is topnotch. The location, opposite the Shinobazu Pond lets you enjoy the cherry blossoms while... More

Being a fan of Inagi, this restaurant with 260 years of history behind it is a place I would not want to miss when I visit Tokyo. It is right across the Ueno Park and is very accessible by subway. The restaurant boosted traditional decor and its waitresses were dressed in Kimono. We order the 3780 Yens (per person) Inagi... More

Izuei Honten is a really nice restaurant, with really friendly staff dressed in kimonos. I got the sashimi, which I didn't like as much as the Unagi. Get the Eel box if you come, because it comes with rice and it's really good.

Japan food tour #4 stop Just south of Ueno, this upscale unagi was not cheap. Most of the set meals were in the JPY 3000-4000 range. For 3800 you get quite a bit of unagi, and if you picked the 3400 options with sashimi, then you get less unagi. As I write this, I am in Kyoto. Today, we visited... More

If you are craving for unagi or just isn't aware of it yet, Izu-Ei is a good place to go. Stylish, if a bit old-fashioned it's a fine setting to enjoy mouth-melting grilled eel. The eel only comes grilled or not, but can be had in a variety of menus. It's not cheap food, but if you go for one... More

We've come here right after we arrived in Tokyo last summer, almost killed by the tremendous heat and umidity of the Ueno area, and the place was simply a paradise. The restaurant is on various floors, and we've been given a wonderful room with a view on the par lake. The eel was a triumph if taste, very very good.... More

After walking around in Ueno Park on our first afternoon in Tokyo, we decided to find something to eat in the neighborhood before heading back to our hotel for the night. Lonely Planet suggested Izu-et, so we thought to give it a try. We knew it was going to be hard to find, base on other reviews. But when you... More

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
