We had a seven dish menu that included sashimi, tempura, sushi along with soup, beef (wagyu) and fish and vegetables, most of it was really good (I wasn't crazy for the soy milk skin or the Japanese egg omelet or the dessert). The esthetic of every dish was just exquisite (especially the appetizers). The place - in the middle of... More

Very formal dinner with colleagues that ended up being a great culinary experience. The walk in the park to get in the restaurant is magical, you don't even feel that you're in the middle of the biggest city in the world. Going back in a few months.

This restaurant is set in beautiful gardens of the hotel. There were many couples being married in the chapels attached to the hotel and the walk down to the restaurant was made more interesting by the wedding parties. The restaurant itself has lava-stone hot plates on which the food is cooked at the table. The food is delicious and the... More

Inside a very beautiful park - famous, among other things, for the fireflies - this restaurant is, in typical Japanese fashion, a mix of elegant and casual. Service (we are in Japan) is nothing short of excellent, the food is exquisite. Had lobster, abalon, meat and various vegetables. Listen, let us make a long story short: if in Tokyo, go... More

I had a very good service. They cook your food for you. What more can you ask for? The place looks clean and impeccable. The price is steep though.

A very modern yet traditional Japanese restaurant set in the gardens next to the hotel, this hot stone restaurant (tables have built in stones) has the most amazing multi-course menu that is uber fresh, grilled and cooked in front of you and with impeccable service and hospitality. Loved the many, many, many courses that kept coming. Quite the dining experience.

As part of a tour we had lunch here. Was a fantastic surprise. The place is located in the middle of beautiful gardens, the ambience is elegant and inspiring, the service was very gentle and the the way of preparing the food was a feast. This is like a tepanyaky but instead of steel they use a block of lava... More

Tucked away in a quiet grove in the garden, the restaurant serves old-style dishes cooked on hot Lava rocks form Mount Fuji, as well as original iron-kettle kaiseki cuisine. (Chinzanso Hotel)

The Mokushundo is on the Hotel Chinzanso property, a short walk from the hotel itself down by the river pathway. We were a large group but both food and service were impeccable. An easy choice if you are staying at the Hotel Chinzanso but a great choice if you're not.

We had an absolutely fantastic meal here, in one of the private dining rooms. The staff were pleasant and extremely helpful, and attentive yet unobtrusive, and the food was second to none. It is all prepared in front of diners, cooked on hot lava stones, and is so beautifully organised that you feel totally satisfied whilst at the same time... More

Staying in Ikebukuro

Neighbourhood Profile
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.
