Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a very traditional Aussie country pub, icy cold beer, friendly staff and great food, not flash but all the things you want and hope for at a venue of this type. My wife and I both had steak burgers - always a bit...of a gamble as it can go horribly wrong. Not this time though, they were delicious - best we’ve had in quite a long time. Great little pub in a fascinating little town. Thoroughly recommendedMore

The Commercial Hotel is a classic, old-school Australian pub, with an on-site microbrewery. Opened by James Slattery in 1881, and later run by his four unmarried daughter, the pub looks much like it did when it was first built. It's an imposing two storey building...overlooking the Hunter River. A large, wide second floor verandah with decorative cast iron balustrades wraps around the front of the pub. There’s a beer garden out the back but it’s a fairly plain, ordinary area. Instead we headed upstairs to the large, airy Verandah Bar. This is the best spot to sit for lunch. From here, you look down over the Hunter River and Illalaung park on the other side of the road. It’s a very pretty outlook. We had a more than decent lunch here. I ordered the slow cooked pulled Moroccan lamb from the specials board ($26). It was served with hummus and tabouleh, was very flavoursome and they didn’t skimp on the meat. Prices were very reasonable.More

Food and customer service a role model for all I have just returned from New York City where I was very disappointed y the food offerings ( Note the food I had in the high end restaurants I visited was superb) it was such a...pleasure to return and drop into the Commercial Hotel in Morpeth for a quick bite What a fabulous experience The food is awesome and the staff amazing Despite their youth they could teach New Yorkians a great deal. They couldn’t be more helpful and what a great cosmoMore

An old Australian hotel on the main st. The food is traditional pub food at a good price and solid quality. The atmosphere is good as there is usually quite a crowd. The beer garden is great for families with children.

One might stop over tonight in Morpeth and had the best sirloin steak at the commercial hotel! Outstanding service and the friendliest staff at the bistro counter and bar!! Great value for money! Highly recommend.

We had lunch here on the Sunday of the Morpeth Bicentennial day in November. I had prebooked a table as I thought it might be busy. I can't say enough about how organised and under control the bistro staff were. As expected, there was quite...a wait for our lunch, but everybody stayed happy and I really enjoyed my steak sandwich.More

Quaint pub nice outdoor seating as well as indoors staff friendly nice range of beers and nicely priced. Not too hungry so just grabbed the share plate. Big mistake - $30 for some very tasteless deep fried pieces - that suspect was largely straight from...a box. Will be back - but will also spend little more time on menu options.More

A pleasant surprise for a lunch stop on the way to the Hunter Valley. My meal was the Pork Schnitzel with Verges, mash and gravy (see photo). Good covered seating at rear. A good option in the town.

The bar staff are exceptional, the amazing female bar staff remembered our drink order and went out of her way to be friendly. Frankly, I would only come back because of her service. I ordered a hot and cold seafood plate which was very ordinary....The one piece of toasted sourdough was charcoaled which was not consumed. Didn’t enjoy the meal as it was not half cold and half hot as advised. Mostly deep fried.More

We walked Swan Street last Sunday looking for somewhere to have lunch and the Pub was the only place that had vacant table for 5. They were very busy and we were told 1/2 hr wait. We initially sat outside but very dark clouds so...moved inside (was very hot inside). Staff were very pleasant - had to go and ask for table & floor to be cleaned (they were busy) . Food was fine. Covid free area.More

We have not been out for a meal since last Christmas due to illness and being in lockdown because of Covid 19. Last night - Sunday - we thought it was safe to venture out, so we walked to our local hotel - The Commercial...Hotel in Morpeth. But unfortunately we were let down. Firstly upon arriving we went to sign in BUT were unable to do so as there was a sign stating RAN OUT OF PAPER - USE YOUR PHONE! Well I am sorry but not everyone has a mobile phone or the Covid App. We are elderly with health issues and have used the paper sign in method on the few occasions we have had to go out for appointments. Secondly our table top was dirty with food smudges and crumbs on both the table and chairs. They obviously had not been cleaned since the lunchtime service. Is this legal in this Covid 19 era? On a positive note the tables were well spaced apart and the food was edible.More

I went to the Commercial Hotel Morpeth for dinner on Saturday 31st August 2018. I I think the bistro restaurant is open for dinner from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm (you can call ahead and reserve a table).
