First the good bits. Rolled up on Father's day and was promptly seated. Friendly waiting staff came with water and menu. Inside was warm, airy, bright and welcoming. The place was full due to Father's day bookings so there was a reasonable wait from taking...the order to bringing it out. Ordered a Meatloaf, and a Fisherman's lunch along with a wine, cappuccino, and orange juice. Firstly the serving sizes for both meals were average, and certainly not large portions. The meatloaf came with steamed vegetables including carrot and broccoli. Meatloaf was ok, but vegetables were very plain and they could have jazzed them up a little. The Fisherman's lunch was supposed to have "prawns" and "barramundi". There was a single prawn on the plate, two pieces of calamari, and two thin slices of fish. Very debatable on whether this was Barra. It certainly didn't taste like Barra, nor look like it. Accompanying this was some wedges and salad. A small meal for the price of $32. The Orange juice was supposed to be large and came out in a standard glass. Overall it was an average meal. A good setting, good staff, but room for improvement with the meals.More
Decided to have a late lunch in this very nice restaurant. Friendly service, wonderful food and finished with excellent scones! Definitely a place to visit.
We ended up here after a hard day's poking around little shops and we just wanted to eat somewhere close. It's a light and airy venue with friendly staff. The menu is interesting and I had the meatloaf which was really good and a good...call on my part because they had a burgundy beef pot pie on the menu as well that my friend ordered and enjoyed. My vegetable accompaniment was pretty pedestrian, though, as no thought went into them other than steaming. If they gave the beans and carrots any sort of culinary treatment it would have made a much more worthwhile dish. As it is, these dishes are at a pub-food standard. Nothing wrong at all with that, as I love pub food, but with just a little more attention, Fortnums could elevate itself above this. As an aside, the pot pie is old hat now. It should disappear like the open club sandwich, serving meat on a board or putting your parma on top of your chips.. How about just making a complete pie? A pot pie is lazy and unsatisfying. Fix up the vegetables and I will come back for that delicious meatloaf, though. Meatloaf. Who would have thought...Damn it was good.More
This is a wonderful restaurant set in a beautiful part of Victoria. Plenty of windows to bring in the light and a lovely deck to enjoy when the weather allows. We both had the Fisherman's Lunch which was both delicious and generous in size followed...by the Date and Honey scones which didn't quite match the taste and quality of the mains. The staff were great and added to the ambience with their friendliness and attention. I would recommend booking as, on this particular Saturday, the place was very busy . Sassafras, and the Dandenong's as a whole, is a great place to visit and Fortnum's a wonderful place to dine.More
Last Sunday I was part of a large family group celebrating a belated luncheon. Whilst the ambience & meals were great, there was a minor problem with two of the meals. I wish to commend the staff for quickly & quietly resolving the problem to...our satisfaction. It was all very discreet and professional. Thank you to the staff. It contributed to a lovely event. Just a reminder to make a booking during busy periods, otherwise you may miss out.More
Food was superb. The weather was a big chilly so I had the meat loaf. Real ‘comfort food’. The staff were amazing and so attentive. Coffee was good too. A pity we didn’t have room to fit in some scones. They looked delicious and were...obviously very popular. We will go back soon. Highly recommended.More
Had lunch at Fortnums for the first time ever. What a delight. The food was delicious. Should have come here before, and will definitely be back. If you get the chance, make sure you have the lemon curd and raspberry pancakes. They should be a...permanent fixture on the menu.More
My friend and I went to Fortnum's for High Tea as a treat while having a short break away. The food was delicious, the service
excellent food, excellent service,i have been there 3 times in the last 12 mths ,i will be returning, if you are in sassafras would highly recommend a visit
We came in to trial the Devonshire Tea. The location is excellent, and you have somewhat of a view of the Dandenong Ranges across the road. The building and its decor hark to the English roots of their Devonshire Tea and High Tea services. From...the menu, the scones initially seemed quite expensive. When they arrived, however, they were quite a lot larger than expected and thereby explaining their price. The date scones are excellent and among the best I have eaten. They also offer a gluten-free scone, which is above-average. It is still a little chalky compared to a wheat-flour scone, but the jam and cream help to mask this. The tea itself was only average, however.More
Beautiful location to explore and enjoyed great food and service. Looking forward to returning. Gorgeous store next door called Lennox of Sassafras which had lovely gifts.
The food is top class homely, the Service personal and lovely. My Mum had never had Affogato before (with Khalua) and it finished the meal beautifully.
I have been to Fortnums twice now with family and friends, both 'Girls Day Out'. The service is excellent and their food is delicious. My family and I are gluten sensitive and have a few allergies, and they catered to us all. The have a...wide selection on their specifically gluten free menu, and each time I have tried to have something different, as the food is also superb.More
We went for a drive up to the Dandenongs. We did have another spot in mind for lunch but luckily it was busy so we came a few yards further up the hill and found Fortnums. My wife had the pumpkin soup and the others...had the chicken, bacon open sandwich. The sandwiches were great lots of fresh chicken heaps of salad. The wife's soup was also a decent size. Others aroind us had the burgers, ploughmans lunch and the roast beef dinner All very well presented. The dining area is a big conservatory with lots of light coming through. Would definitely go backMore
