Personally I wouldn’t stay on the Lido, OP, but if you do I recommend buying a vaporetto pass which will reduce the high cost of single journeys mentioned above
May is a better bet than September. The daylight hours are quite a lot longer. And the weather is more likely to be good, particularly in the west
Two nights in Venice gives you only one complete day - not nearly enough to do justice to such an astonishing place.
If you start with a couple of days in Edinburgh it would be easy to take a day trip to Auchterderren by train - the nearest station, I believe, is Cardenden.
Jordansbulls that is a short and easy walk from Piazzale Roma, where the ATVO bus will drop you.

The islands would be a good choice for you - they never get crowded, apart from a few popular spots on Skye. Islay, Jura, Mull, the Outer Hebrides, Orkney, Shet...
