Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
Eat, see, and stay in Shinkyogoku Shopping District
We stumbled across this after Nishiki Market and were pleasantly surprised. It’s a compact shrine, but lots to see including some animatronics!
They don’t draw Goshuin in books, but will sell you one on a piece of paper. Or, they have free stamps which you can use to stamp your non-temple notebook
"Sanjo Shopping Arcade Super Interesting to Experience"
reviewed 5 June 2018 by SkiBikeNorthwest
Sanjo shopping arcade was great to see with all of the different shops and amazing food choices. We stopped in for a custard in the shape of a red snapper that is a celebration food for them. Great for souviners too.
Imagine a maze of covered shopping streets lined with restaurants, shops, going up a few stories and full of people. Take time to wander and appreciate the variety of restaurants, you can get McDonald's, Burger King or KFC as well as Indian curries. We found a revolving sushi shop and enjoyed our lunch . We saw vintage clothing shops, used...
Yeah tasty and fast at a reasonable price - good English too.
My young kids had a bite of mine first and had to have one each.
Unsure how the last reviewer could have possibly got small bones in kebab given the way the chicken is prepared and cooked.
Would happily have another kebab there anytime.
"Amazing dishes and well thought out taste profiles"

It's a very intimate setting of around 10 seats. You get to watch the chef prep everything. He also spoke English and explained every dish, which I think really improves the experience. The dishes were all very well thought out and the timing of the dishes made sure that all the tastes are very well balanced. It also had a...
We initially chanced upon this branch after we saw the other branch at Kyoto station. The shabu shabu is of high quality, with a good vegetable selection. Not to mention the free flow Haagen Diaz. I highly recommend this restaurant for a good shabu shabu meal, which helped us stay warm in the cold Kyoto winter.
This restaurant is specialized in Kaiseki cuisine . We had a private room, a private chef and the meal consisted in 9 dishes , all of them excellent . The service was fantastic . if you want to try this cuisine ( specialty of Kyoto ) go there absolutely . It's a fantastic experience
Delicious food and great for gluten and dairy allergies. Close to Nishiki Market too which is perfect. I wrote a more in depth review at our blog randrwander if you are interested to hear more about this yummy restaurant!
Surprise gifts on arrival! In the heart of Kyoto, close to all the major attractions. If you really want an insight of the japanese culture you have to stay at least 1 night! Extra mattress in the closet. Try the spa in the basement, after 10pm is the best time! I went with my family and the stay was amazing....
I stayed two nights in this lovely ryokan and had a fantastic stays for 2 nights and the meals were outstanding! Traditional ryokan managed by 7 and 8 th generation, beautiful hotel, incredible kaiseki style dinner presented in exquisite lacquer ware. Kimonos laid out for guests to wear. Charming staff. Fluent English. Well organised. Would come back in a heart beat.
I stayed in this hotel in March 2018 to see the cherry blossoms and experience all the sites. Although the hotel is a little old, it is very clean and comfortable and it has a great location. The staff were very helpful and I enjoyed the Japanese breakfast.
