Perhaps the best place to get your bearings is Syntagma Square, crowned by the imposing Parliament building on its upper side and surrounded by other large structures, such as the exclusive Hotel Grande Bretagne. The grand avenues that lead towards Omonia are also full of massive Neoclassical edifices like the Numismatic Museum and those around smaller Platia Kolokotroni. Here you will find lots of travel agents, bookshops and fashion shops, especially on Ermou Street. Just south of Syntagma Square, you can take a breather in the lush National Gardens, which extend into the grounds of the Zappeio palace and beyond to the ancient Temple of Olympian Zeus.
As a collector of Classical coins this was a must see and certainly did not disappoint. The collection is fabulous, with a great overview of classical coins. The highlight thought was definitely the personal collection of Heinrich Schliemann, and a cheeky dekadrachm Owl!!
If you want to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier then turn up during the week before the crowds arrive rather than on the Sunday at 11am or your attempts at taking photos can be ruined - there are no manners here and the crowds are horrendous.

Passed by several times on our way to other Athen's highlights. A bit of green space with a Fountain and a couple cafes. Never thought about actually stopping until we ended up using it as a spot to meet up with friends that happened to be in Athens as well.
"It’s hard to rate a subway station, when your goals are mixed"

We went here, since we were walking around Athens, to see ruins that had been discovered when the subway was built, not so long ago. No one knew what we were asking about.
But as a subway station, it was just fine: clearly marked and we got to our destination without any trouble. And at that destination, we did find...
Amazing place for a beautiful view of Athens, go at night when you can see the Parthenon lit up! Cocktails are inventive, delicious (with a hefty price tag). There is a large inside dining area, smallish bar (around 6-8 seats) and a nice outdoor seated patio. Must make reservations; we booked the day before and were only able to secure...
A few people know the difference between ice cream and gelato. At 'Le Greche' they definitely do! Lots of options and many unique flavors. Make sure you try the 'ouzo pera' flavor and the gluten free cone; it tastes like heaven!
My husband and I are from the states and have been away for a few weeks and were craving Mexican and margaritas. I had the salad with chicken and he had the beef quesadilla and shared guacamole. They were all very fresh and small quaint place. (think Chipotle type place)
We loved Met32. The room was modern and spacious with a small balcony perfect for breakfast. The location on a quiet alley in Plaka was convenient and we were able to walk everywhere. The staff was exceptional and took care of our every need. We highly recommend.
This little boutique hotel is a true jewel in the centre of downtown Athens within a 5 minute walk from the parliament building. The hotel consists of rooms that give onto a central courtyard. The rooms are very well appointed and the staff is delightful. All the sights are within a 10-15!minute walking distance. We are so glad we found...
Definitely a 5 star hotel. Excellent staff, location and views. The view of the Acropolis at night alone is worth the stay. Restaurant was exceptional and service was superb. Room was spacious and we couldn't have been happier, particularly with the view. Classic hotel that endures over time.
Checked in for a night before heading off to santorini. Had some trouble finding the place because it's tucked in off the main road but you have to go past some incredible shopping so can't really complain . The check in was smooth the staff are helpful the breakfast was good. Checks all the boxes
We experienced great service and friendly welcome from door man and front desk. We were registered and shown our room in short order. We were upgraded to a lovely junior suite. It was nicely appointed with clean, comfortable furniture and a generous walk-in closet. Bathroom amenities were lovely too.
Two of the highlights of this hotel were its friendly staff...
