Explore the story of the horse and its role in Irish culture over 2000 years. Located in the heart of the Golden Vale, the Fethard Horse Country Experience offers visitors the opportunity to discover the rich culture and heritage of the region. Part of Ireland’s Ancient East, this interactive experience examines the relationship between the people, the land itself and the horse revealing how they are all inextricably linked. The meticulous restoration of the C17th Tholsel building forms part of the journey of re-tracing the history of the area. Paring the building back to its bones, the body of work it now houses tells the story of the area from pre-Norman times to present day. Cromwell and the planted lands, the tradition of hunting and point to point, the horse’s role in farming and of course the evolution of the world class bloodstock industry are all illuminated. Individual tales of characters well remembered are woven into the overarching themes embedding them in their historical context. Fethard is the finest example of a small medieval walled town in Ireland and views of these walls set against a backdrop of working farms and horse-filled fields give visitors an immediate connection to the past with a simultaneous feeling of living history. In a sense, it is the horse that for generations has formed the backbone of this vibrant local community.
