Hotels near Castell Coch

While resting on ancient foundations, Castell Coch (Red Castle) is relatively modern, the by-product of a vivid Victorian imagination, assisted by untold wealth. The Middle Ages fascinated the Victorians as much as the Victorians fascinate us today. The ‘eccentric genius’ William Burges was given free rein by his paymaster, John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, the 3rd marquess of Bute, to create a rural retreat to complement the opulence of his main residence, Cardiff Castle. Visitors can admire dazzling ceilings, over-the-top furnishings and furniture at Castell Coch, before a visit to the quaint on-site tearoom. The displayed opening times are our general pattern. Please check the Cadw website for unexpected closures, opening times, events, and site facilities.

Beautiful castle with lovely tea rooms
Stopped here as a mid-way point on a long drive to North Wales, and what a lovely stop it was! The castle itself is beautiful, well laid out and with easy to use recorded details about each room you visit. Staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Had a lovely pot of tea and Welsh cakes in the cafe. Very tasty, beautifully served by lovely staff and very sensibly priced considering they have a ‘captive’ client base.

Excellent use of a couple of hours!
We had passed by the castle when travelling towards pontypridd from the M4 and on this occasion decided to take a small detour to visit. We were very pleased we did. The castle is relatively small but fully intact with lots of rooms to visit. The interior decorations are fascinating and the audio tour guide very informative. You will need to be quite fit to climb all the stairs but we'll worth the effort.

    Very enjoyable
Excellent parking for able bodied and disabled. Staff friendly and helpful. We had a falafel, onion and hummus panini to share with 2 coffees for £11 in the cafe served by friendly staff. Will definitely go back to explore more of the grounds.

Small castle but a lot of rooms to visit and a lovely cafe.
Visited on a very wet and windy day. For a small castle, there was a surprising amount to see and lot of rooms to visit. Good for a wet day. We had the audio guide which was interesting. Spent about 2 hours in the castle and also visited the cafe which was lovely. There is also a gift shop. Would have loved to walk around the grounds but the weather was too wet.

    Fairytale Castle
We have driven past the castle that’s on the distance from the motorway, always looked fairytale like set in the heart of the mountains. the step drive up to the castle is amazing passing thought a small village then you get to the castle. The castle itself from the outside is amazing its grand tower and grandness of the building once a magnificent castle with a moat. We didn’t go inside as the admission charge I thought was quite expensive so we just had a walk around the outside of the castle taking amazing pictures. As the castle is high up you can see for miles breath taking views of the valleys and landscapes below, we had an amazing winter sunset with orange sky which was the perfect backdrop for the castle.

If you are car free and taking the bws.
    1) Wear proper hiking boots and take bus to the end, use the bus app. 2) use the two office parks to the right instead of sidewalks, safer. 3) after the bridge cross the BUSY traffic circle counter-clockwise. The trailhead is on the back of the circle. 4) the first part is like an old road but when the fence on the right ends, look for steps on the left. THIS IS NOT MARKED. 5) from here the trail is steep and after a rain quite slick but with proper footwear you should be fine. I hope someone starts maintaining this trail and blazes the path. Pob lwc!

    Magical!
We really enjoyed our visit to the Wonderland that is Castell Coch. A bit like wandering into a real life Disney Princess Castle. Although Castell Coch is not the original building the amount of wealth and research lavished on this "re-build" is stunning and the attention to detail brings to life a more opulent time. We really enjoyed wandering around and soaking up the atmosphere. The painted walls are so detailed that is worth spending time looking at them. We visited the wonderful tea shop too. Friendly staff, basic facilities, ell worth a visit. We were just disappointed to learn that we could not visit again at Christmas due to restricted opening.

    Worthwhile visit
This a a beautiful little castle not far from Cardiff. With the audioguide, it is definitely worth the price. The audioguide is well done. The castle is very beauitful. If arriving by train then walking, google will direct you the long way round, but there is a trail through the woods that cuts the walk down by 10+ minutes.

    Who doesn't love Castell Coch
A pad in the country for the Marquis finished in a certain style, and with humour abound. Thankfully Burgess had an eye on the original ruins and incorporated that into his architecture of a very distinctive building. Attended a wedding here many moons ago and was impressed then (thankfully this building has lasted longer than that marriage)! There is scaffolding about at present on the outer but that doesn't detract from your visit. And, it means that Cadw are looking after the old place.

    Small enchanting castle with treasures
A true fairy tale castle-but lots of steps. Interesting furnishings and displays. Take time to enjoy all the interior decorations--painting, ceilings, furniture. Amazing what lots of money and creativity can do together.
