Exmouth history and where to stay

Exmouth is famous for its proximity to Ningaloo Reef, and popular boat tours such as swimming with the massive (but harmless) whale sharks between April and July. It is also recognised as a fishing mecca, hosting international fishing competitions such as Gamex annually due to over 35 species of game fish being found nearby and around the Muiron Islands and local jetties such as the Learmonth Jetty near the airport. Exmouth is also famous for its local prawning industry. Exmouth has a small supermarket and more accommodation options than Coral Bay. There are accommodation options ranging from camping at caravan parks to 4-star resorts like Sea Breeze Resort or Exmouth Escape Resort near Exmouth township.

Beaches near Exmouth

Exmouth has sheltered beaches on its eastern side, as well as spectacular beaches with coral reefs just offshore on the west side like Turquoise Bay where the tame fish will eat bread from your hand. Turquoise Bay is 63 kilometres from the Exmouth Visitor Centre in Exmouth township and is great for snorkelling. The ocean "drift" current literally gives you a free ride over some lovely snorkelling reefs with plenty of fish life as it is a no fishing zone, but beware of the current if you are not a strong swimmer or take a flotation device with you as the beach does not have a rescue patrol.

Day trips to Coral Bay

The Ningaloo Coral Reef and Ningaloo Marine Park area stretches for 260 kilometres very close to shore between Exmouth and Coral Bay. It is accessible directly from the shore - no need to pay for a boat trip to get to it. Exmouth also has the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse and the Mildura shipwreck on the north shore. Also clearly visible are the masts of the Harold Holt Communications Centre naval facility. Coral Bay is a very small town nearby, population around 500 people in low season. It's quite feasible to do day trips to Coral Bay from Exmouth at around one and half hours drive each way. Provisions in Coral Bay can be limited as its very remote. Coral Bay is perfect for snorkelling on the reef directly from the shore as the reef is very close, but can be a bit limited for options when it’s very windy.

Outdoor activities near Exmouth

Another great spot to visit is Cape Range National Park, which covers 50,000 hectares spanning low ranges, mangroves, gorges, tidal creeks and limestone caves, so there is a lot to see and do there. Its peaks have great views east right across the Exmouth Gulf. Milyering Visitor Centre on Yardie Creek Road on the western coastal side has some interesting displays and information about the National Park, and is about 53 kilometres from Exmouth town. Yardie Creek Gorge is a few kms past the Milyering Visitors Centre and has quite an interesting boat tour of the gorge. The Yardie Creek Gorge is a seawater fiord - lots of vehicles wait till lowest tide each day to cross the tidal creek and continue south along the coastal route down to Coral Bay. The crossing is recommended for 4WDs but some people with normal 2WD cars attempt this as well, and it can be quite entertaining just watching the intrepid drivers crossing the creek from north shore vantage points! Note that the coastal track between Coral Bay and Exmouth is only suitable for 4WD vehicles.

Getting around Exmouth

Exmouth is about 1,200 km from Perth. Direct daily flights from Perth to Learmonth airport take about 1.5 hours. Alternately if you hire a car from Perth, it's at least a two-day drive in each direction, with a stopover recommended along the way somewhere like Geraldton or Kalbarri. Learmonth Airport is 36 km south of Exmouth. You can hire cars from the airport which is a recommended way to explore the area's attractions. Tourism in many remote areas like Exmouth are limited to day tours, unless you have a car for access to attractions that are quite spread out in the region. Most people hire a car to get around, although there are several tour coach companies with a selection of day or half day options.
