Crowded paths but a nice break from even more crowded streets and motorbikes. It is about a mile around so it's good for a downtown jog if you are early, otherwise you need to dodge the crowds and hop up and down off the path. We had a drawing of our child done by an 'artist' by the lake for 200k. Didn't really look like her. Be aware of pickpockets in the general area. While I was walking around the lake hand in hand with 2 small children one early evening, as my wife was running around, I was definitely being followed by someone with bad intentions. I slowed, stopped and eventually circled around in front of, staring at him before he went on his way, acting innocent. Maybe he was one of a pair, I couldn't see the other.

We visited this large, centrally located park during our recent visit to Hanoi. The first trip was about 9:15AM and the the following day we visited again about 6AM. GO AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE, it's a different experience after the workday starts. While the park is pleasant any time, the early trip reveals a vibrant, outdoor hub of the city with paved paths, benches and multiple plazas throughout. We saw HUNDREDS of people of all ages dancing, jogging, playing badminton, drinking coffee and socializing outdoors, fishing, cycling, even doing laughing yoga (which we were invited to participate in). Very picturesque and an easy ten minute walk from our hotel, which we could navigate on our own. The turtle temple and Japanese bridge were beautiful and easy to access during opening hours, but the real treat for me was the Hanoi culture and city life visible all around--- just after sunrise.

Hoan Kiem Lake is a cultural symbol of Hanoi and one of the most famous destinations. In the early morning, this place is crowded with people exercising, walking, and enjoying the fresh air. Hoan Kiem Lake is a peaceful spot in the middle of Hanoi’s chaos. I loved walking around it early in the morning when it was quiet and calm. The view of the Turtle Tower in the middle of the lake is beautiful, especially when the water reflects the sky. Locals practicing tai chi and the sound of birds make it feel like a small escape from the city. The red Huc Bridge and Ngoc Son Temple are lovely too, though they can get crowded later in the day. It’s a nice place to sit, relax, and watch Hanoi go by.

The legend of the golden turtle and magical sword added such a romantic atmosphere to our visit. We loved watching locals doing tai chi at sunset while enjoying our Vietnamese coffee. The red bridge to Ngoc Son Temple is absolutely stunning when lit up at night. A must-visit spot in Hanoi!
