The most significant square of historical Prague, it was founded in the 12th century and has been witness to many historical events. In addition to the Old Town Hall and the Church of Our Lady before Týn, the square is dominated by the Baroque Church of St Nicholas, the Rococo Kinský Palace, the Gothic House at the Stone Bell and the monument to Jan Hus. In the pavement of the square are memorial stones marking the execution of 27 Czech lords in 1621, and the Prague meridian.

Very Busy , but such a Beautiful Square
We arrived for our 4 day stay on the Saturday afternoon , checked in and walked about 15 minutes into the Square from our Hotel. It is stunning to be fair , the architecture , statues , churches and endless array of lovely little restaurants dotted about the Square give it an undeniably touristy feel without losing its identity , and of course the 600 year old Astronomical Clock. As I said it was a Saturday afternoon when we first visited and it was really busy , we got into the Square just before the hourly show on the clock and it was almost impossible to get anywhere near the clock , but that's irrelevant , you still get to see it and it really is amazing to watch something so old still doing its thing....Over the course of our stay we walked through the Square numerous times , stopping for Dinner or just having a drink as we were passing through , sometimes not as busy and sometimes as busy. It's definitely worth a visit , there is a lovely feel to the Old Town Square ...Enjoy

    Beautiful BUT ….
Beautiful but overcrowded day and night. Impossible to find a reasonably priced restaurant with local food without prior reservations especially if you want to eat after 5 pm . Whatever is available is occupied by locals who are hugging tables for hours.

    Busy Square
Any visit to Prague is not complete without visiting this square at the heart of the city. The main attraction is the astronomical clock. If you want to see the astronomical clock in action, make sure to claim a spot 10-15 minutes before the top of the hour as there were large crowds every hour even on a chilly November weekday. There were many restaurants in the square, though prices were predictably higher than other parts of Prague. The Charles Bridge is a short 10 minute walk from the square.

    Excellent square
We stayed nearby and loved the vibrancy of this square. Yes it can get very busy but there is so much to do in this square. You have the astronomical clock, bars and restaurants, horse stalls selling smoked meat and lots more. During our stay on the last few days we experienced some light snow which really enhanced the atmosphere.

    Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. X
A beautiful square to visit with so much to see and take in. Loaded with history and a pleasure to walk around this square. Also, home to the astronomical clock, which is a must see. No visit to Prague would be complete without visiting this square and meandering through the surrounding streets.

    Simply beautiful
The square is a great place to go to for pictures of antique architecture. The famous clock is there, and you get a great view of the old Prague city gate. It's especially interesting during the holidays when decorations are set.

    My Favorite City
Be prepared when you visit Prague in January. It is snowing and oh! So cold, but worth every minute of it. I just love the architecture, the mystery it holds, the sacredness of this place. From my hotel balcony, the view is so beautiful, early morning and at night time. Stroll through the interesting city as you enjoy Lots of vendors, restaurants, souvenir shops, cafes and amazing sculptures. Take time to witness the astronomical clock. Word of caution, keep your belongings close to you, as there are many people side by side, waiting for the clock to strike.

    Great Piece of History
There's so much amazing history that transpired in this square and the buildings that surround it. Centuries ago, it was the market square. One might not think the square is impressive or important, but when one considers its historical significance, it puts everything into perspective. This square was where the original Protestant Reformation began in the 15th Century. The Marien Columb was erected to celebrate the end of the 30 Years' War. It was taken down to celebrate the end of the Hapsburg Dynasty and put up again because of its historical significance.

    Charming Easter Market
Around the time I visited in mid-March, this postcard-perfect square in Old Town Prague—the square of all squares when it comes to this lovely city—was host to an Easter-themed market, with a variety of food stalls, live music, and activities for children. It was a bustling yet relaxing environment to soak in the history and culture of Czechia. Flanked by colorful architecture and the iconic astronomical clock tower, the Staromestske Plaza embodies all what makes Prague so special.

    Around and around the square
What a great place! This Old Town Square has so much to see and lots to do. Restaurants, cafes, historic churches, a tower to climb for the views, horse & buggy rides, street food, the list goes on. And don't forget the famous astronomical clock which puts on a show on the hour. When touring around Prague, we always came back here for a meal, drink or snack, to watch the crowds go by. One hint: When the crowds are gathering to watch the clock at the top of the hour, make your way to the tower. You'll get in with no line-up and can enjoy your time at the top without being crowded. Another hint: Get a "chimney cake" filled with ice cream and toppings. There are lots of small take-out shops that sell them. Delicious! Or a sausage on a bun from a street vendor.
