Varied Museum on top of a hill overlooking Auckland
Walked to the Museum from Queen Street. Quite an uphill trek! Huge, impressive museum. Several themed areas eg WW2, Maori Culture, Antiquities, Art. There are two tearooms and a restaurant. The Winter Gardens and Duck pond are also nearby. Good views. There is a Maori presentation several times a day. I found the WW2 museum most moving. Because I am a UK resident we don't have the same knowledge of how the first and second world wars affected Australia and NZ and this museum filled this gap to a certain extent.
Kia ora Katharine, thank you for your review. It's great to hear that you were able to make the walk across from the CBD and that you enjoyed everything that the Domain had to offer. We pride ourselves on our War Memorial, so thank you for taking the time to pay your respects and learning about this important history.

    Very Enjoyable
A great way to spend a few hours learning about the Maori people and the histories of New Zealand and Auckland. The museum is well organized and not at all overwhelming. We took a leisurely stroll through each of the exhibits. They have plenty of lockers to store jackets and bags and a lovely snack bar and restaurant. Loved the gift shop. Suggest stopping here from the Hop On/Hop Off bus.
Kia ora, thank you for taking the time to leave an in depth review. It's so wonderful to hear that you had such a great visit and we hope to see you again soon at Tāmaki Paenga Hira.

Arguably best museum in New Zealand
Housed in a massive building situated in a lovely park, the museum packs a lot of information on the Maori history and culture. The natural history is also well represented, with special attention given to the native species. Last but not least, the museum houses large exihibitions dedicated to the history of New Zealand and its participation in the two World Wars.
Kia ora Gabriel, Thank you for sharing your great experience with us and for taking the time to leave a review. It's awesome to hear that you enjoyed our Māori galleries and our dedication towards New Zealand history.

    Totally fantastic
Totally fantastic. You really need at least 3 - 4 hours. We were there almost 3 and didn't see everything. The displays are amazing. Learned so much. Not boring at all. Never made it to the War Memorial. We did walk down the hill to the greenhouses and that was definitely worth it. We visited the museum via the Auckland Explorer Bus. So we were able to travel thoughout Auckland and then pay an additional fee for the museum. Well worth it. Would recommend.
Kia ora, it's great to hear that you were able to fit in a trip to the Museum on your tight schedule and that you saw so many things while you did so! We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Auckland and thank you again for visiting Tāmaki Paenga Hira.

What to do on a rainy day?
It was miserable weather in Auckland. So we thought what we could do- the museum of course. As national museums go- this was logical well signed and not overwhelming with technical speak. It was well lit, and not overcrowded with exhibitions. It was however, relatively expensive for non locals $26. Each. Kept us occupied for three and a half hours
Kia ora, thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We hope you enjoyed your rainy day visit to the Museum.

Amazing museum - fantastic representation of culture, geography and history
Amazing museum! So many exhibits, all incredibly well displayed and with excellent accompanying detail. You could spend weeks here and not see everything. I learned so much in my few hours here. I love how the different cultures and stories are represented. I went solo, but there were so many things for children and families to do - I highly recommend staying here. There is ample parking both under the museum and outside, and as a resident of Auckland I had free admission. There were two coffee shops and a beautiful shop. Lots to explore!
Kia ora Zarza, thank you for your glowing review. It is awesome to hear that you enjoyed your visit so much - we do definitely recommend making multiple visits if you'd like to see and experience everything on display. We hope to see you again at Tāmaki Paenga Hira.

Family fun for all looking at the past and present
Took bus from central city to museum. Museum has three floors of great content including history, including was memorial. Resturant and cafe also are located in the building. I highly recommend for all ages. Note: Apart from general admission, there is additional cost for RELIC Legos and 3D movies- did not purchase.

    What a great museum
Spent a worthwhile visit at the museum to familiarize myself with New Zealand. Appreciated the extensive exhibitions of Maori and Polynesian cultures. Have a better appreciation of New Zealand's contributions in the two world wars.
