- Nish98114 contributionsAmazing placeThe birds are free to fly around pretty much anywhere and mix with the other birds, staff and visitors rather than being stuck separated in cages not doing much - always feel a bit sorry seeing that. They are absolutely everywhere, in the trees, on the walkways, in the cafe and one will probably end up on your shoulder at some point. Felt a very natural environment resulting in happy, active and friendly birds. Breakfast good too. Cockatoo absolutely insisted on climbing up onto a shoulder before breakfast had even started. Would definitely benefit from seeing a few additional types of birds if they can get them trained / happy to do so, especially given there’s such a range in the centre.Hi Nish, we are so happy that you had an amazing time at Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas and enjoyed hanging out with our feathered friends. She was amazing, and made this a really memorable experience for our daughter. We got to hold and hug a koala, feed wallabies, and get close to tons of other animals. One of the highlights for our daughter was to visit the animal rehabilitation center, and see the little babies being cared for. - robyn rMelbourne, Australia309 contributionsWorth a visitThis sanctuary houses a variety of Australian birds and animals including koalas and kangaroos. We most enjoyed the small nocturnal section which had jumping mice and the bouncing bettong. We felt that some animals needed more space (for example the cassowaries looked stressed). We did not take a tour and preferred to wander around at our leisure.Hi Robyn, Thank you for your review. We are so glad that you had a great visit and enjoyed spending time with the Australian birds and wildlife, particularly the nocturnal animals. We would like to assure you that the well-being of our wildlife is our top priority. We can confirm that our cassowaries and other wildlife are not stressed as you mentioned. Cassowaries are solitary, diurnal and territorial birds, and they are most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Our cassowary feeding presentation is scheduled at 10am daily, where you would get to be up-close and possibly even the opportunity to hand-feed the cassowary. We believe that if you have joined the presentation, you would have learned and understood more about this magnificent bird species. We are accredited by ZAA (Zoo and Aquarium Association), whose standards are higher and focused on animal welfare, also known as the 5 Domains which ensures animals are receiving the correct nutrition, environment, health, behaviour and mental state for their particular species. ZAA grants accreditation to zoos and aquariums that have clearly demonstrated their commitment to positive welfare. Our exhibits are designed to provide environmental enrichment, also known as behavioural enrichment which provides species-appropriate challenges, opportunities, and stimulation. All our exhibits exceed minimum requirements set by Biosecurity Queensland whose standards we must meet to gain an Exhibitors License. We hope this helps you understand the efforts that our wildlife team take to educate visitors on Australia’s iconic animals while ensuring positive animal welfare.
