- Robert D4,716 contributionsA must see in Alice SpringsI visited The Kangaroos Sanctuary in the late afternoon. Kangaroos sleep during the day so they only have tours at sunset, as the roos are waking up. The Kangaroo Sanctuary is home to baby kangaroos whose mothers were killed by cars. They hand-rear the joeys until they are old enough to be released back into the wild. They also have other adult kangaroos who can't be released since they have a disability which would make it impossible for them to survive in the wild. Red Kangaroos are the world's largest marsupial and are native to this part of Australia. The founder of the sanctuary is called "Brolga" because he is 200 cm./6'7" tall. He is currently "kangaroo mother" to 27 babies he rescued. He has a rapport with the kangaroos and was a wonderful guide. Joeys are raised in pairs for companionship and also so they can use their mate's heat to keep warm. They are placed in pillow cases to mimic their mother's pouch. Everyone on the tour was required to hold a joey for a little while and pass the joey to another tour participant. These joeys are 7 months old and I got to hold both of them. You can also see a beautiful sunset.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 3 November 2023
- BIGTRAVELLER149 contributionsDefinitely an experience not to be missedThis has to be the best part of my time in Alice Springs. The owner clearly loves the kangaroos he cares for, knew all their names. If I lived here I'd definitely be volunteering to help out. Love this place. If you're in Alice Springs make sure you book a trip it's definitely worth it. Loved every minuteThank you for your lovely review. And if you ever do live here, please be one of our kangaroo mums. - Amy DKing of Prussia, Pennsylvania221 contributionsAmazing experience that you don't want to missDon't miss going to the kangaroo sanctuary in Alice Springs. It was one of the top things I did in all of Australia. The story about how the sanctuary got started and all they do to save baby kangaroos is amazing. You will get to see kangaroos close up and your admission helps them to continue to save kangaroos. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire visit and I learned a lot about kangaroos. Support this important sanctuary and the work they are doing.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 November 2023
- Rhiannon K4 contributionsAbsolutely excellentAs a Territorian I’ve seen heaps of Kangaroos, but this tour was excellent. Brolga had lots of information to share. He explained how to look for and what to do if you find a Joey. He really cares lots about his kangaroos. We walked around the sanctuary and got to hold a baby kangaroo. They’re so cute. Go and have a look for yourself. I loved it. I can’t wait to go back.Thank you so much Rhiannon We love it when locals visit. We can't wait to see you again. Cute pics! - SWAUSHORNAustin, Texas145 contributionsAn Australian Highlight and TreasureIf you are not an Aussie (like us) and are enamored with Kangaroos then this is a must do if you are in Alice Springs! We stayed in Alice Springs for one night prior to heading over to Uluru for a few days and I had seen some posts about the Kangaroo Sanctuary, I knew this would thrill my wife, so when the time came to book a visit (usually 3 months out) it was the first thing I did, and I'm glad we did. From the time we were picked up at the Hotel (conveniently the one we were staying at) to the time at the sanctuary it was magical and so informative. Chris really goes the extra mile to engage everyone during the tour (which are not very large - maybe 20 people) and shows us all the aspects and the life cycle of the Roo. Being able to walk among them and feed them and hold them was so cool and then seeing a momma with her Joey was a highlight. It was just a special, special afternoon, one that my wife and I will not forget.Thank you for visiting and for your lovely kind words. This is a great description of our tour and what we do. - Olive Pink Botanic Garden HotelsThe 16 ha area that is now Olive Pink Botanic Garden was gazetted in 1956 as the Australian Arid Regions Flora Reserve after intense lobbying by the Garden’s founder, and first honorary curator, Miss Olive Muriel Pink. The Garden is part of a substantial area of contiguous Crown Land that extends east from the Todd River on the southern edge of the Alice Springs Central Business District. Prior to 1956 the land was unoccupied and grazed variously by feral goat, rabbit, and cattle populations, such that the vegetation on the floodplain area was fairly modified and devoid of tree and shrub cover when Miss Pink took up occupancy there in 1956.Miss Pink and her Warlpiri assistant gardeners spent the next two decades battling drought conditions and almost non-existent operational funding to develop Miss Pink’s vision for the Reserve. Together they planted a somewhat eclectic collection of trees and shrubs native to the central Australian region as well as various cacti, garden flowers, and introduced trees around Home Hut that could withstand the harsh summers.Read more
