Don't miss: Egypt on the shores of Burley Griffin
We went to the Discovering Ancient Egypt exhibition at the NMA which is going to be in Canberra until 8 September, and agree that it was well worth the visit. The space is well curated, and people with wheelchairs or large prams seemed to be able to move around well. Our tickets were for 1:30 and we left about 2:45. The information signage is very useful/interesting and easy to see. A QR code for the tour (there is also a 'kids tour' version) is just inside the exhibition entry on the left-hand side, we remembered to bring our ipods and were happy to listen to the additional information about the objects - but it's not necessary as the display information is great. The separate space housing mummies is respectfully done and well signposted, if someone wants to skip this part. Don't miss the short curator's video about how the delicate papyrus pages are prepared for travel. We also briefly visited other parts of the museum and were amazed at all the changes! It's much more open and inviting than we remember and we're looking forward to a return visit.

Carlos a hidden gem in this museum
We were greeted by Carlos in the garden of dreams and he very politely informed us that we could not take drinks into the gallery and explain exactly why, the best was yet to come. For the next 30 minutes Carlos welcomed us and gave us an incredible insight into the museum’s history, architecture and themes that ran throughout the building. We were blown away with this as we would have never realized how much every detail meant something. Nothing was too much for Carlos and he went above and beyond with his incredible knowledge and pleasant personality and made us feel like we were the only guests there that day. Thanks again Carlos :)

Great place to learn about Australia, really good displays
I really enjoyed my visit to the National Museum. It was one of the first things I did in Australia. The museum has loads of displays about the country and takes you through Australia's history and different areas. It's a great place to learn about the country with many displays regarding Indigenous peoples, technological innovations, medicine, engineering, architecture and lots of other stuff.

Egypt was wonderful and see the rest of the museum while there
I went to see the Egypt exhibition and it was amazing. I visited with a 9am ticket and it was great as there was hardly anyone there. Lovely to see all the artefacts without crowds (like British Musuem for example) but it was pricey at $20 for student and $25 for adult. But for was worth it for the quality of the items shown. The rest of the museum is very interesting. The First Nations galleries are enlightening yet confronting. I assume this is why some the reviews here try and criticise the museum for having a strong Indigenous focus? But isn't that really Ok when contemporary Australia has a 200 year history and Aboriginal nations have a 60,000+ year history? We have a long way to go as a country to grow up.

    Phenomenal, must see museum!
The National Museum of Australia is unlike any other museum I’ve visited. The combination of history, science, culture, and ideas are all interwoven with a profound respect for the aboriginal peoples and their culture. The exhibits contain moving real life stories, along with an understanding of the profound impact of climate change on the continent of Australia and our planet. We especially liked the First Australians Gallery and had a fabulous personal tour by Lindsey of the Garden of Australian Dreams and Breathing Space. Lindsey was so friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about what each design element signified - I wouldn’t have understood what I was looking at without his guidance! We spent a very happy six hours at the museum - which also has a great little cafe for lunch. This museum was our favorite site in three lovely days in Canberra!

Great exhibition , changing theme of exhibits
Several times, I have been here. It’s always interesting about exhibition, esp. temporary one, April 2024:Egyptian mummy . It’s exotic, real mummy experience. Exhibition leads you into real ancient surroundings. Vicinity of Museum is also relaxing, good place for strolling around the lake Burley Griffin. Outdoor permanent exhibition is also extraordinary about sound of indigenous music.

    Egyptian exhibition was excellent
We visited this museum for the first time to see the Egyptian exhibition. It was a fascinating visit and although the tickets were a bit pricey, the artefacts on display were well presented. The display was world class and I recommend this to all who visit Canberra. The exhibition will be open until September 2024. We did not have time to see the other exhibits but the building itself was spacious and seemed well designed. Will return to look at the other displays.

Preserving Australian & First Nations History.
Our first attraction to visit in Canberra, headed there early on the Sunday morning, firstly to have breakfast in the cafe and then explore the museum. Although many areas of the building were barricaded and closed to visitors for renovations and extensions, we still discovered enough interesting exhibits to view until lunchtime. We enjoyed the Great Southern Land exhibition, the indigenous content, the story of colonisation and betrayal, the wonderful paintings and art pieces that depict a rich ancient culture and so much more.

    Brilliant Ancient Egypt Exhibition
We came here this weekend to see the Discovering Ancient Egypt exhibition .. a truly amazing collection spanning 3000 years of cultural and spiritual history on loan from the Egyptian and Nubian Collection of the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities. Central to their belief system were their gods and their own journey to the afterlife. Impressive parts of the exhibition for me were the variety of sarcophagus on display all customised to the interned. The separate room with the mummies was very sobering (& rightly no photography was allowed of the mummies). At the end of it all one can’t be left to be both amazed by this rich civilization as well as being a bit troubled by the removal of mummies from their resting places thereby interfering with their journey to their afterlife. I don’t know if there can be a solution to such a paradox when we have such a thirst for discovery. All-in-all an amazing exhibition, well worth seeing.

    Extraordinary Egypt Exhibition
We went to the Egyptian Exhibition. It was worth every single bit of the $25 entry fee. I went with a friend and spent just about all day there. The exhibition was busy, but not crowded and you could take all the time you wanted to appreciate the experience. The National Gallery of Australia could take some serious leaves out of the Museum’s book on how to really do an exhibition. I appreciated being able to see all the objects up close to view the sheer detail of their construction. I particularly valued the sensitivity and respect that the Mummies were given too. The Tour Guide who was there was very very well informed about the Exhibition and he clearly loves his work. This exhibition alone was worth every bit of the 3 1/2 hr drive to get to Canberra. I’d do it again for this exhibition

  • Blundells Cottage Hotels
The stone dwelling, now known as Blundells Cottage, was built in 1860 to house a local land owners head ploughman, William Ginn, and his family (1860-1874). It was then occupied by George Blundell, a local bullock driver and his family (1874-1933) and finally by shepherd Harry Oldfield and his wife Alice (1933-1958). After Harry's death in 1942, his wife Alice took in boarders. This included one of the last occupants, the Sainsbury family, who lived at the cottage between 1958 and 1960. After all it's occupants had moved out and following its restoration, the Cottage was handed over to the Canberra and District Heritage Society in 1964, which managed it and established a museum collection. Since 1999 it has been managed by the National Capital Authority (NCA) as a house museum. It is the only pre-Federal Capital building in Canberra's National Triangle. The Cottage is open each Saturday from 10 am - 2 pm (Excluding Christmas Day and Boxing Day)
