Great Exhibition but Gallery Topsy Turvy
The Gallery seems to be undergoing renovations and repairs but I enjoyed the wonderful exhibition Know my Name. It made up for all the closed galleries. Away from here, the general feeling is not very people friendly. I walked in from the lake side and it was difficult to find an entrance where one used to be. The cafe was closed. I had already walked up the escalator before finding out on leaving that the cloak room was in the shop, so carried my bags around with me. The saving grace after the wonderful exhibition was the Members Lounge at the top of the building, with my reciprocal membership for members of other city galleries. It is an oasis and haven: lovely ambience with its comfortable chairs, fantastic views, coffee and tea facilities and reading materials. I think it may be the best Members Lounge I have encountered. The lady on reception was warm and friendly and made you feel very welcome.

Do NOT MISS the Emily Kam Kngwarray exhibition
Yes, you have until the 28th of April to see the Emily Kam Kngwarray exhibition at the NGA in Canberra, but there's every chance you'll want to see it more than once. From the minute I entered the area I was immersed in colour, design, textiles, dots and the absolute beauty of the artist's country. Photos do not even begin to describe the way the art captures you, body and soul. Honestly, this is one of the very best exhibitions - brilliantly curated and generous. Tell your London-based friends that they will be able to see the exhibition in 2025 at the Tate Modern. But lucky you can enjoy this amazing collection right now at the NGA.

    Traditional, Indigenous, Contemporary, Quirky.
Enjoyable morning at the gallery, great exhibits by artists Sidney Nolan, Vincent Namatjira, various European, Australian and other nationalities. We greatly enjoyed the indigenous artforms and paintings, outstanding talent. Exhibits ranged from the more traditional to the contemporary with some quirky pieces indispersed. Amazing that some of what is publicly objectionable is perfectly acceptable in art, e.g.; L'Enlèvement d'Europe, Woman Possessed. Not sure why there was a fuss about the Namatjira exhibit, Australia in colour, an interpretation of the artist. Fiona Hall's cut and moulded 23 sardine tins were miniature masterpieces that would not have been out of place in MONA. Large areas of the gallery were roped off in preparation for new exhibitions, meant backtracking to a lift and no signage directions. Thankfully the staff were very helpful and accommodating.

    Some good artwork here
We spent an hour or so wandering the gallery. It’s free admission unless you want to visit an exhibition. Gauguin exhibition was showing, but we didn’t have interest in this. There are a number of very well known works here such as Monet’s Waterlilies, Pollack’s Blue Poles, Nolan’s Ned Kelly series, a beautiful Albert Namatjira, and an early work of Hobart town. There was also a cafe, seats to sit and enjoy, plenty of toilets, and a pay car park ( expensive but not hugely so)
