- Revista HotéisSao Paulo, SP2,941 contributionsUNESCO World Heritage Site and postcard of PortugalThe Jerónimos Monastery has been classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1983. In the place where it stands today, it was the Church of Santa Maria de Belém, but in 1496 King D. Manuel I asked the Holy See for permission to build the monastery. The works that began in 1501 took almost 100 years to finish, as the best architects, masters and craftsmen of the time were chosen. The monks of the Order of Saint Jerome were chosen by D. Manuel I to occupy the Monastery, but they would have, among other functions, to pray for the king's soul and provide spiritual assistance to the navigators responsible for the discoveries. But in 1833 the Order of Saint Jerome was dissolved and the monastery was vacated. The facade of the Jerónimos Monastery is more than 300 meters long and its large, light walls were built with lioz limestone, a material from the region itself. The monastery is seen as the jewel of Manueline architecture, which mixes Gothic and Renaissance elements. Royal, Christian and naturalistic symbols are also placed on the sculptures. To visit the monastery you have to queue and tickets vary a lot from 12 euros, but can be purchased at a lower price through the Lisboa Card and entry is free for citizens residing in Portugal. The monument today is divided into three parts: the cloister, the Church of Santa Maria de Belém (free entry) and the National Archeology Museum, which is in the modern part. Vasco da Gama, Luís de Camões, D. Manuel I, D. João III and many members of the royal family are buried in the monastery.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 February 2024
- endlesswanderlustingMolfetta, Italy922 contributionsSlightly questionable organisationDefinitely very very beautiful and not to be missed but with some problems. Maybe because we had a very long queue to get in on a Sunday. Tickets can be purchased at a kiosk across the street (so it's better to have only one person go there to buy them while the others stand in line). Once inside the route is guided but then at the exit there is a bitter surprise: you have to get back in line to enter the adjacent church where entry is free! In short, hours of queuing practically useless. Wouldn't it have been simpler to let those leaving the monastery directly access the church? Bah...Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 February 2024
- GherardinoVienna, Austria924 contributionsGigantic in all dimensionsNot allowed in the previous day due to pouring rain, we tried to make up for the omission the next day, with mixed feelings. The church of Santa Maria is just as gigantic as the national Pantheon. Its dimensions also seem to exceed all measure. Of course, the fact that Vasco da Gama, celebrated there as a hero among national heroes, is actually buried here has a unifying effect. However, the impression is becoming increasingly clear that it is not the basilica that determines and permanently shapes the visit to Belem, but the adjacent Monasterio. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you spend an extra euro to visit the sacristy. GherardinoVisited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 February 2024
- Luis GBilbao, Spain4 contributionsAwesomeA truly amazing experience! The Jerónimos Monastery is simply stunning in every way. From its imposing architecture to its rich history, every corner of the monastery transports you to another time. We were amazed by the beauty of the stone details and the magnificence of its cloisters. Furthermore, the guided tour was informative and allowed us to learn a lot about monastic life and the cultural importance of this place. I would definitely recommend a visit to Jerónimos Monastery to anyone who is interested in the history and architecture of Portugal. An experience that we will not forget!Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 February 2024
- szymValenciennes, France125 contributionsVery beautiful architectureThe monastery is really very beautiful, it has very, very beautiful architecture. The price is interesting for people aged 24/25 or less, because it comes to €12 for 2. Otherwise I find it a bit expensive, because if you don't make several photo stops, the tour can go quickly. The church is free.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 February 2024
- Kelen Yumi H16 contributionsWhen you visit Belém, be sure to visitBeautiful place, beautiful architecture, well preserved despite its "age". Visits to the cloister have a cost and entry to the church (where the bones of Camões and Vasco da Gama lie) is free. Very worth the visit.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 March 2024
- BorisSerbia276 contributionsWorth a visitThere are big crowds at the entrance, so you need to buy tickets in advance. Even with the Lisbon card we had, we had to wait 45 minutes to enter. The interior is beautiful and photogenic, spread over two floors. Next to it is the church where Vasco da Gama's grave is located.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 March 2024
- marie86Belfort, France658 contributionsBeautifulGet there early... Wait in line... even before opening! Buy the ticket online because there is a first queue for tickets. Beautiful building. Grandiose. Indeed, we don't admire furniture or paintings or pieces there.' but the facade the walls the work of details. Nice visit.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 15 March 2024
- adv1977Turin, Italy763 contributionsA world heritage site, with good reason!Huge and very beautiful monastery architecturally built at the beginning of the 16th century. Unfortunately, the excessive amount of people queuing (at least 2 and a half hours of waiting) to visit it inside discouraged me and my family, so we were unable to admire the wonderful cloister in person. However, the external structure already makes it clear why this building has been declared a "World Heritage Site".Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 March 2024
- Pepita0506Paris, France352 contributionsUnavoidableIn my opinion, this visit is essential since it testifies to the richness of Portuguese discoveries throughout the world. The monastery is located a few steps from the Lisbon Archeology Museum and opposite the Monument to the Discoveries (accessible via an underground passage accessible under Avenida Brasilia from the garden), itself very close to the Belém Tower. If you have the Lisboa card, you will not pay entry (and therefore will not have to queue). We went there on a magnificent sunny day around 1:00 p.m.; we had to wait 2 minutes to get in. Even if children do not pay when they are under 13, they must still be registered online for on-site visitor counting. We were accompanied to do this by an extremely helpful and friendly lady who even took advantage of this aside to explain to our children, in French, who we could see on the door of the church just opposite. The monastery, which in Portuguese bears the name Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983. Designed in the 16th century, it is a remarkable work of architecture in the Manueline style. It was built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's return from India. For the record, the location chosen was that of the Ermida do Restelo, the chapel where he and his crew spent several hours praying before beginning their journey. The church also houses his tomb. It is obviously the cloister and its 2 floors which transported us with its impressive sculptural richness. The lower floor, built by Diogo Boitaca, is pierced with large arcades whose tracery rests on thin columns. The style of the upper floor, built by João de Castilho, is less exuberant. In a corridor of the cloister there has been the tomb of the poet Fernando Pessoa since 1985, whose statue you will find near which you can sit at the Café Brasileira in the Chiado district.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 March 2024
