One of Japan's most-visited hot springs resorts, the hilly city of Beppu is often blanketed in steam, providing a clue to its enduring appeal. It's unabashedly touristic, but sinking into a steaming thermal pool offers an appealing way to escape the crowds.

This city on the central Vietnamese coast is a well-preserved example of the important Southeast Asian trading port it was from the 15th-19th centuries.
